Qstarz Explore 2000Gadget testing generally involves a bit of tethering to a location, but with the Qstarz Explore 2000 I have a licence to roam.  The QStarz Explore 2000 is a GPS enabled sports recorder designed to record, manage and analyse your sporting movements in the great outdoors.  Thanks to Qstarz, DigitalReviews is heading for the great outdoors ... risking life and limb in the depths of a cold Melbourne winter, the "swine-flu capital of Australia".

Promise DS4600While we are busy putting together our review of the SmartStor NS4600 NAS device, Promise Technology have announced the sister unit: The SmartStor DS4600. While the DS4600 lacks its older sibling's ethernet port, it features USB 2.0, Firewire 400, Firewire 800 (x2) and eSATA ports for maximum flexibility.

This new unit will allow users to easily setup RAID 5, RAID 0 or RAID 1 storage arrays, allowing for up to 7.2TB of storage when in RAID 0 configuration (hard drives not included).

And All this for under $400US!

While these will go on sale in late June, we're looking forward to having a DS4600 in our labs for testing a little earlier, ready to follow up on our upcoming review of its big brother, the NS4600.

Promise SNS

What's the biggest problem with Network Attached Storage systems?
That's right: they are hard to set up and configure for the average Joe.  Now that the market is moving towards having NAS in every home because we need the convenience and capacities, time has come for what is boldly proclaimed as Zero Configuration by the folks at Promise Technology.  There is no need now to fully understand RAID technology or be conversant with SMB, AFP and similar acronyms.
How well will this work?  Because if it does it will be a godsend for most people and even most computer stores, struggling with the high rate of return for these units when people are frustrated in trying to configure these units.

How did Promise manage to make it so simple?

OZHWe've been publishing quite a few reviews on NAS units lately here on DigitalReviews.net  -- and we're not done yet!

In them we always talk about RAID configurations and provide a brief explanation when we do so.

But sometimes it's good to get more than just a quick reminder and dig into a solid overview of all the RAID possibilities.

Well, our friends at OZHardware did just that and here's the link to an excellent article.

They haven't mentioned RAID 10 yet but there are two more advanced write-ups coming!

Thanks, guys!
