Read more: Thecus N2310 Budget 2 Bay NAS -- ReviewedWhen it comes to Network Attached Stoary (NAS) we tend to go big but that isn't always necessary, or cost effective.

The N2310 is Thecus' entry level NAS device and priced under $200AUD, it might be the perfect introduction to the world of networked storage.

From our own experience we know that many small businesses-and for that matter even larger ones, have not discovered or implemented NAS units in their organisations.
This is not a primer on the benefits of NAS but a summary of our day-to-day experience with the RS814+ which is the latest product from Synology aimed at serving the smaller businesses.

More importantly, the RS814+RP was launched at the same time that the latest implementation of DSM 5.0 was released, the heart and soul of the machine. We'll spend some time highlighting the new features of this latest update of the operating system.

This external hard drive, just announced by Apricorn, is a sure contender for the product with the longest title. Because I should have also mentioned that FIPS is really FIPS 140 – 2 Level 2 Validation....
I hear you thinking: yeah, whatever that means!

So let me explain it in layman's terms. This is easily the most secure, the toughest, and the largest capacity drive (up to 6 TB!) you can buy for a fairly reasonable amount of money in 2014.

Let's see what is inside this Fort Knox of HDDs.

I've lost count on how many devices from Apricorn we have reviewed over the past 10 years.
The Padlock series is the most secure external hard drive line available today and Apricorn seems to be the market leader in this field.
No surprises there.

What did surprise me was how small the form factor is of their latest Padlock SSD!
So let's have a look once I can find the key to this Padlock....

You know the problem: your old laptop is few years old and a bit wheezy. It is not as fast as it used to be and you have tweaked enough bits and pieces to know that it really needs a heart bypass operation. We are talking about replacing the hard drive.

The obvious choice to get things moving faster is to install an SSD. Good choice but expensive and not nearly as much capacity as your old laptop. What we need is a combination of SSD and conventional hard drive. Something like the Western Digital Black 2 Dual Drive. It is fast, it will fit in most laptops, and it has enough capacity.

What's not to like?

Sometimes a new product is so similar to what we reviewed earlier and only differing in capacity that we are happy to refer to an earlier review. Such is the case with the new Apricorn Aegis external drive which now comes in a 256 GB capacity and minus the security keypad of the other model.

So let's just summarise what this one is all about.

Occasionally we do a "Show " rather than a series of reviews of products from the same company. That highlights a bit more the scope and range and makes it often easier to differentiate between the various units.

So on today's smorgasbord we present three different NAS units from QNAP on the menu: we have the brand-new TS -220, a real lightweight beauty and at the other end of the scale the TS-870U-RP, an 8 bay budget beast for the big end of town. And to round it off we also have the newly announced TS-421 which fits squarely in the middle.
Let's have a look.
