With a rising proportion of Gen Z entering the workforce, generational differences between employees and employers in the workplace has never been greater – fresh research from Robert Half recently uncovered that it affects 99% of Australian employers.
This research pinpointed technological proficiency (29%) and work-life balance expectations (28%) as the most significant challenges facing employers when leading multi-generational workforces.
Echoing this data, the Logitech for Business Showcase Panel 2025 – featuring insights from three esteemed panel speakers at Logitech for Business, Ingram Micro, and Microsoft – explored the trend of rapidly shifting employee expectations.
“Employees’ expectations are exponentially higher than they’ve ever been before,” argued Peter Garner, Director of Solution Sales for Asia & ANZ at Microsoft.
“They want flexibility, being able to work from home and work remotely when they want to. They also want to go into the office and have those serendipitous water cooler conversations, where they talk to their colleagues or somebody from another business unit or team.”
Mani Nathan, Head of B2B Channels at Logitech, also said younger employees are increasingly demanding cutting-edge technologies to foster collaboration and productivity in the modern workplace, whether it be at home or in the office.
“Employees’ expectations are really around the collaborative tools you provide, the experience you provide, the productivity tools that you provide – I think that’s gone off the roof, as rightfully it should be,” he described.
“The ecosystem of products that you offer is going to be crucially important to retain your talent.”
Hope McGarry, Executive Managing Director, Australia at Ingram Micro, said this isn’t unsurprising, given that younger workers are commencing their professional careers in a time when hybrid work and artificial intelligence (AI) are the new norm.
“As you’ve got early career hires coming through, they’ve got different expectations around flexibility. They haven’t worked in corporate for the 20-25 years prior to the pandemic and they don’t have any insight into what that actually was like. So they’re absolutely expecting corporations and organisations to be flexible and to support the ways in which they wish to work,” she explained.
Beyond Gen Z, which accounts for 27% of the labor force, future workplaces will soon need to accommodate the expectations of Gen Alpha and the newest generation, Gen Beta.
As reported by News.com earlier this year, the oldest members of Gen Alpha began their working careers in 2025. For Gen Beta, known as those born between 2025 and 2039, their entry into the workforce will redefine what it means to be a digital native.
This ultimately reinforces the need for organisations to keep pace with AI developments to drive efficiencies among digitally savvy generations and mature age workers alike.
We are in an era of digital workplace transformation, which is a significant tailwind for companies like Logitech and Microsoft as they integrate AI technology into their products, rapidly enhancing the employee experience across all generations and improving team collaboration worldwide.
