HP has launched Print AI in Australia, promising to tackle something almost everyone who has owned a printer can relate to: frustration.
On the face of it, the first problem HP is targeting is a good one.
More than half of home and office print jobs now originate on the web, according to data cited by HP. Anyone who has tried printing a recipe, travel itinerary or long-form article will know what happens next. What looked perfectly sensible in a browser suddenly becomes six pages of broken formatting, oversized images, advertising and a mostly blank sheet containing nothing more than a footer.
HP’s answer is Precise Print, part of the company’s new HP Print AI platform.
Precise Print automatically cleans up web content before it reaches the printer, removing unwanted advertising and addressing awkward spacing and image sizing. The idea is straightforward: get something closer to the document you actually wanted on the first attempt, rather than discovering the problem after paper and ink have already been consumed.
That’s a use of AI I can understand.
AI solving an actual problem
There’s an understandable degree of AI fatigue at the moment. Seemingly every device and service needs an AI story attached to it, regardless of whether artificial intelligence makes the product appreciably better.
Printing web pages is different.
It is a messy, inconsistent problem involving content designed primarily for screens being squeezed onto a fixed physical page. If HP can reliably interpret that content and produce a cleaner document without requiring users to manually copy, paste, resize and reformat it first, there is tangible value here.
HP Print AI extends beyond Precise Print, too.
HP says its support system uses natural language and contextual awareness to guide customers through setup and provide customised assistance. It can remember preferences and previous questions to make subsequent support more relevant.
On the commercial side, HP Scan AI Enhanced can identify scanned document types and extract relevant information for business workflows. HP cites one deployment across a 300-location Italian retail group that resulted in an 80 per cent reduction in labour costs associated with its delivery and inventory workflow.
There are worthwhile ideas here.
But there’s also an unavoidable wrinkle in HP positioning Print AI as a way to reduce printing frustration.
HP has some history here
For many consumers, the frustrations associated with printers haven’t been limited to badly formatted web pages.
HP has faced considerable criticism over the years around the broader ownership experience of its printers, particularly cartridge restrictions, subscription-based ink services and the impact that firmware and authentication systems can have on third-party consumables.
That history matters.
It doesn’t mean Print AI should be dismissed, nor does it make Precise Print a bad idea. A useful feature remains useful regardless of arguments surrounding other parts of the product ecosystem.
But consumer trust is cumulative.
When a company promises to make printing less frustrating, customers will reasonably judge that promise against their experience of the entire product — not simply whether an online recipe fits neatly onto two sheets of A4.
There is an opportunity here for HP to address both.
Reducing wasted paper and ink through smarter formatting is valuable. Making setup and troubleshooting easier is valuable. If those improvements are accompanied by a straightforward, predictable ownership experience, Print AI could contribute to something more important than adding another AI badge to a technology product.
It could make owning a printer less annoying.
There’s still some fine print
Australian availability is also narrower than the broad “Print AI” branding might initially suggest.
HP says the service is available on newly activated compatible devices across selected DeskJet, ENVY, Smart Tank and OfficeJet Pro ranges.
There is another notable requirement: HP Print AI currently requires an AI-capable HP printer, the HP app and **Windows 11 for setup**.
That qualification is worth keeping in mind when considering the promise of simpler printing.
None of this takes away from the underlying idea. In fact, Precise Print may be one of the more practical applications of consumer AI we’ve seen lately precisely because the problem doesn’t need to be invented to justify the technology.
We’ve all fought with a printer.
HP now has technology designed to remove some of that friction. The bigger opportunity is demonstrating that reducing frustration isn’t simply an AI feature – it’s a rethinking for the whole printer.
