Described as the ‘Uber for nannies‘, NannyLane Australia is a newly launched childcare marketplace app, built to make high-quality childcare more accessible, flexible and affordable for Australian families.

As a parent myself, I have had plenty of experience needing a little support with care for my children from time to time.

NannyLane connects parents with trusted, verified nannies quickly and easily through an on-demand digital marketplace. Unlike traditional childcare agencies and daycare providers, NannyLane gives families the ability to secure childcare immediately or book ahead, without expensive placement fees or long waiting lists.

The app was founded by working parents Julie and Patrick Menary after experiencing firsthand the challenges of finding reliable, flexible childcare while balancing careers and family life. The idea came during a real parenting dilemma when Patrick was unexpectedly delayed at work while Julie was home with their sleeping newborn, leaving nobody available to collect their older children from school.

At that moment I remember thinking, why isn’t there an Uber-style app for nannies?” said Julie Menary. “That simple question became the starting point for NannyLane.

Patrick Menary added that the platform was designed with parents’ real-world needs at the centre of every decision. “From day one, our focus has been on safety, flexibility and affordability,” he said. “If a feature didn’t genuinely make life easier for families or carers, it simply didn’t belong on the platform.

Q&A with NannyLane

Recent allegations involving former childcare worker Joshua Dale Brown have raised serious concerns for many Australian parents and renewed public discussion around childcare safety, screening processes and accountability.

As a parent myself, those reports were deeply concerning. With child safety front of mind, Digital Reviews Network submitted a series of questions to the team at NannyLane to gain a deeper understanding of the platform’s verification procedures, safeguarding measures and approach to connecting families with carers.

We would like to thank the NannyLane team for their time, transparency and prompt responses to all eighteen questions.

The full Q&A is below.

1. While WWCCs are a legislated requirement, recent cases have demonstrated the limitations of relying solely on that process. How does NannyLane’s ‘Verified Nanny Profile’ system go beyond basic ID and WWCC verification to assess a nanny’s suitability to work with children?

At NannyLane, we recognise that child safety requires more than a single verification check. Every nanny must complete government-issued identity verification and hold a valid Working With Children Check before being approved on the platform. Beyond these mandatory requirements, nanny profiles are also considered based on the inclusion of information relating to childcare experience, qualifications, certifications, references, reviews, and other supporting credentials (First Aid, CPR, and Police Clearance). These are displayed on profiles to provide greater transparency for families, allowing them to make informed decisions.

Our approach combines upfront verification, profile transparency, secure platform technology, and ongoing accountability through ratings, reviews, booking history, and monitored platform activity.

2. Beyond identity verification and WWCC validation, what screening measures are undertaken before a nanny is approved for the platform?

NannyLane’s multi-step verification process is conducted through a combination of applicant-provided information and manual review by our team. They closely review identity documentation, Working With Children Check details, references, qualifications, and profile information where applicable.

Every nanny profile undergoes human review before approval prior to being live on the site, ensuring there is oversight beyond a purely automated process.

3. Are references independently checked and verified by NannyLane?

In addition to identity documentation and qualifications submitted during the on-boarding process, references are manually checked and verified by the NannyLane team. However, NannyLane encourages families to conduct their own assessment and interviews before engaging a nanny as well. Families are also able to review ratings and feedback from previous bookings completed through the platform.

4. Are employment histories, childcare qualifications or certifications verified?

Where qualifications, certifications, or supporting credentials are submitted, these may be reviewed and displayed on the nanny’s profile. Families can view this information alongside experience, reviews, and other profile details when making a booking decision.

5. Are interviews conducted as part of the onboarding process?

NannyLane does not currently conduct mandatory interviews as part of onboarding. We believe families are best placed to determine suitability based on their unique childcare requirements and are encouraged to communicate directly with potential nannies before confirming a booking.

In the instance of on-demand bookings, while there is no time for interviews, parents can rest assured that any nanny that is live on the site has been thoroughly vetted and holds all essential qualifications required.

6. What percentage of nanny applications are rejected during the verification process?

As a growing platform, rejection rates vary over time. Applications are not accepted on the platform where mandatory verification requirements, including Government identity verification and Working With Children Check validation, cannot be satisfactorily completed.

7. Carers on the platform are described as ‘trusted’, ‘verified’ and ‘high-quality’. What criteria must a nanny meet before NannyLane is comfortable making those representations?

The term ’verified’ refers to the completion of NannyLane’s mandatory verification process, including government-issued identity verification and Working With Children Check validation. The terms ‘trusted’and ‘high-quality’ reflect the broader trust and accountability framework within the platform, including verified identities, transparent profiles, visible qualifications and credentials, ratings and reviews, secure payments, booking records, and ongoing community feedback.

We believe trust is built through transparency, accountability, and informed decision-making by families, rather than relying on any single credential alone.

8. Following recent childcare abuse cases, what specific child-safety measures has NannyLane implemented that go beyond minimum legal requirements?

NannyLane has implemented several measures designed to improve transparency and accountability, including identity and qualification validation, secure Stripe-powered payments, detailed profiles, ratings and reviews, booking records, in-platform communications, and real-time booking visibility.

Unlike informal childcare arrangements sourced through social media groups or classifieds, all activity on NannyLane is linked to verified user accounts and recorded within the platform.

9. Is NannyLane purely a marketplace connecting families and carers, or does it take responsibility for assessing a nanny’s suitability and safety?

NannyLane is a technology platform that facilitates connections between families and carers while implementing verification, transparency, and accountability measures designed to support safer decision-making. While NannyLane conducts their own screening process, the final decision regarding suitability remains with the family, who can assess profiles, credentials, experience, reviews, and direct interactions with carers before booking.

10. If a safeguarding concern or serious complaint is raised, what is the process for investigation and response?

Any safeguarding concern or serious complaint is treated as a priority matter. Reports are reviewed promptly by the NannyLane team, relevant information is gathered from the parties involved, and immediate action may be taken where necessary to protect families and children while the matter is assessed. Where appropriate, accounts may be suspended during investigation, and matters may be referred to relevant authorities.

11. Under what circumstances would a nanny be suspended or permanently removed from the platform?

Nannies may be suspended or removed where there are concerns regarding child safety, breaches of platform policies, fraudulent activity, misrepresentation of credentials, inappropriate conduct, failure to maintain mandatory verification requirements, or any behaviour inconsistent with the standards expected on the platform.

12. Are families notified if a nanny they have previously booked is later removed due to safety concerns?

Where appropriate and permitted by legal and privacy obligations, NannyLane may communicate relevant information to affected families where there are material safety concerns.

13. Live GPS Tracking provides ‘added visibility and peace of mind’. What information is actually tracked, who can access it, and how does NannyLane believe this feature improves child safety outcomes?

NannyLane’s live tracking functionality is designed to provide greater visibility around active bookings. Location information associated with a booking is available only to authorised parties involved in that booking.

While no technology can replace active supervision or good judgement, increased visibility, accountability, and transparency can provide families with additional peace of mind and greater confidence regarding booking activity.

14. The platform includes ratings and reviews. How does NannyLane ensure that reviews do not create a false sense of security, given that serious safeguarding concerns may not necessarily be reflected in public ratings?

Ratings and reviews are only one component of the information available to families and should not be relied upon in isolation. NannyLane encourages families to consider all available information, including verification status, qualifications, certifications, experience, profile details, and direct communication with carers when making decisions.

Reviews are intended to support transparency and accountability rather than replace individual assessment.

15. Does NannyLane provide any insurance coverage for families or carers using the platform? If so, what does that coverage include?

As a platform that facilitates connections between families and independent nannies, NannyLane does not currently provide insurance coverage for individual childcare engagements. NannyLane continues to evaluate opportunities to enhance protections available to users as the platform grows.

16. The premium tier includes ‘VIP Nanny Access’ and ‘Priority Matching’. What criteria determine whether a nanny is classified as VIP?

VIP classification is based on a combination of factors including profile completeness, responsiveness, booking history, ratings and reviews, qualifications, credentials, and overall engagement on the platform. The designation is intended to help families identify highly active and well-regarded carers within the NannyLane community.

17. Does NannyLane require any minimum childcare experience, training or qualifications to join the platform, or can any individual with a valid WWCC and identity verification create a profile?

Nannies must complete identity verification and hold a valid Working With Children Check. While childcare experience, qualifications, First Aid certification, Police Checks, tertiary education, and other credentials are strongly encouraged and prominently displayed where available, families ultimately determine which combination of qualifications and experience best meets their needs.

18. NannyLane is positioned as making childcare more affordable and accessible. How are nanny rates determined, what fees are charged to carers, and what safeguards are in place to ensure carers are fairly compensated while remaining affordable for families?

NannyLane empowers carers to set their own rates, ensuring they maintain control over the value of their services. The platform’s model removes many of the significant agency placement fees traditionally associated with nanny recruitment, helping reduce costs for families while enabling carers to retain more of their earnings.

Payments are processed securely through Stripe, providing transparency, reliability, and efficient payment management for both families and carers.
