The confluence of recent events has seen some changes in consumer attitudes. Just ahead of Earth Day on 22 April 2023, refurb tech retailer Reebelo releases new data that indicates a significant change in consumer attitudes towards purchasing recycled tech, even when it comes to one of its most popular items: the humble laptop.

The data, which covers the period between December 2022 and January 2023, reveals a 50% increase in orders of refurbished laptops, suggesting a growing trend among Australian and New Zealand consumers to be more eco-conscious and mindful of their spending, while also appearing more educated about the importance of reducing e-waste and finding ways to save without compromising on their technology experience.

It comes following the recent release of YouGov research, which revealed that while consumers are becoming increasingly price-conscious when buying electronics (77% say price is now their key focus), those aged between 18-24 are primarily influenced by sustainability (49%) rather than price.

We are thrilled to see that Australian consumers are increasingly aware of the importance of reducing e-waste and are actively seeking ways to do so. Our mission is to make refurbished technology accessible and affordable to everyone, while also reducing e-waste and promoting sustainability,” said Gulrez Tyebji, Managing Director of Reebelo ANZ.

Sustainability is at the core of Reebelo’s mission, and in 2022 alone, the company helped to save 5 tons of e-waste – the equivalent of saving 15,000 trees, 197 million litres of drinking water, and 1410 tons of greenhouse gases otherwise emitted.

The fact that we have been able to save five tons of e-waste in just one year is a testament to the growing awareness and demand for sustainable technology solutions,” he said.

Recently, the company reported an almost tripling of all sales within Australia and New Zealand over the past two years, with gross merchandise value (GMV) up 12X over the same timeframe. As a result of the company’s Y-O-Y sales growth, Reebelo was also able to donate 200% more towards the One Tree Planted program that helps support reforestation around the world — further reducing its environmental impact.

We are grateful for the continued support of Reebelo, who have helped us to plant over 100,000 trees so far through our partnership. The trees we plant together will have positive impacts on nature, biodiversity, and people for years to come” said Ashley Lamontagne, Forest Campaign Manager at One Tree Planted.

Reebelo offers a wide range of refurbished tech gadgets, including smartphones, laptops, tablets, and gaming consoles, all of which come with a 12-month warranty and are rigorously tested and refurbished to ensure they are in top condition.

As Earth Day approaches, Reebelo is encouraging consumers to make a positive impact on the environment by choosing refurbished tech gadgets. By doing so, they can reduce their carbon footprint and contribute to a more sustainable future.
