As online gaming continues to play a central role in many children’s social lives, Roblox has introduced Family Zone, a new interactive experience designed to help parents better understand the platform while learning about online safety alongside their children.

Rather than presenting parents with lengthy help articles or configuration guides, Family Zone transforms learning into a collaborative game. Built by Roblox in partnership with developer MindTrust, the experience encourages parents and caregivers to jump into Roblox with their children, learning the fundamentals of the platform through shared gameplay.

Learning together through play

Family Zone is built around the idea that children often know Roblox far better than the adults trying to supervise them.

Instead of parents teaching children, the experience deliberately reverses those roles. Children guide their parents through basic gameplay, helping them learn avatar movement, navigation and exploration while encouraging conversations about how Roblox works and why certain safety features matter.

According to Roblox, the goal is to bridge the knowledge gap that can make parental supervision difficult, giving families first-hand experience rather than relying solely on written documentation.

Interactive parental controls

Beyond teaching gameplay basics, Family Zone walks parents through Roblox’s existing suite of parental controls using interactive lessons.

Parents with linked accounts can learn how to:

  • Set screen time limits
  • Manage in-game spending
  • Choose who their child can communicate with
  • Control which experiences their child can access
  • Discover age-appropriate Roblox experiences
  • Players who complete tutorials can also unlock exclusive avatar items as rewards, making the educational process more engaging for younger users.
  • Expanding digital safety education

While Family Zone focuses on Roblox today, the company says it intends to broaden the experience with additional educational modules covering wider online safety topics.

Future content is expected to include guidance around:

  • Scam awareness
  • Bullying and cyberbullying
  • Recognising predatory behaviour
  • Building resilience online
  • Mental wellbeing in digital spaces

To support these initiatives, Roblox is working alongside organisations including mental health nonprofit Koko, educational developer Playerthree and researchers from Northwestern University’s Lab for Scalable Mental Health.

Part of Roblox’s wider safety strategy

The launch follows Roblox’s broader push to strengthen child safety across the platform.

Earlier this year, Roblox introduced globally available Roblox Kids and Roblox Select accounts, providing age-based protections, expanded parental controls and experiences designed to evolve as children grow. Family Zone builds on those technical safeguards by helping parents understand how to use them effectively.

The company says Family Zone will continue to receive new educational content and co-play opportunities over time, reinforcing its goal of making online safety an ongoing conversation rather than a one-time setup process.
