Spotify has introduced Running Mode, a new personalised fitness experience designed to automatically build a running soundtrack that adapts to a user’s workout style, preferred tempo and music tastes.
Available from today for Spotify Premium subscribers on iOS in Australia, New Zealand, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland and Sweden, Running Mode aims to remove the effort of creating workout playlists while delivering a more engaging running experience.
Rather than simply shuffling songs, Running Mode creates an entire guided workout session based on user preferences, matching music to running cadence while optionally providing coaching prompts throughout the session.
Personalised workouts built around your music
Running Mode lives within Spotify’s Fitness Hub, where users can choose from 25 curated running presets before customising the experience.
Options include:
- Steady runs
- Interval sessions
- Pyramid workouts
- Custom workout durations
- Target running tempo (beats per minute)
- Preferred music style or mood
Once configured, Spotify automatically generates a playlist designed specifically for that session, selecting tracks that align with the chosen running pace while maintaining smooth transitions between songs.
The result is intended to keep runners in rhythm without needing to manually skip tracks or build playlists beforehand.
Pace-matched music
One of Running Mode’s headline features is its ability to match music tempo to a runner’s selected cadence.
Rather than relying solely on existing workout playlists, Spotify dynamically selects tracks that align with the desired beats per minute, helping runners naturally maintain their preferred pace.
Combined with Spotify’s existing recommendation algorithms, the feature produces a personalised soundtrack unique to each user.
Built-in coaching
For users wanting extra motivation, Running Mode also offers optional spoken coaching prompts.
Available in English, these short audio cues provide encouragement and workout guidance throughout the session without overwhelming the listening experience.
Spotify describes the feature as having “a supportive friend running alongside you”, helping users stay focused while allowing music to remain the primary experience.
Expanding Spotify’s fitness ecosystem
Running Mode builds on Spotify’s growing collection of fitness content, which already includes workout videos from creators and integrated fitness experiences such as Peloton classes.
According to Spotify, demand for personalised workout experiences has continued to grow, with fitness-related prompts becoming some of the most popular uses of its earlier AI-powered Prompted Playlists feature.
Running Mode represents the next evolution of that concept by creating an end-to-end workout soundtrack rather than simply generating a themed playlist.
