Arlo has launched its new Essential Solar Security Camera in Australia, bringing an integrated solar panel and unusually large battery to its more affordable Essential range.

The pitch is straightforward: put the camera somewhere useful and spend a lot less time climbing ladders to recharge it.

Arlo says the integrated 1.2W solar panel needs as little as two hours of sunlight per day to keep the camera powered under suitable conditions. More interestingly, the camera packs a 14,790mAh battery, which Arlo claims can provide up to six months of operation without sunlight when fully charged. Actual battery life will naturally depend on settings, usage, the amount of activity captured and environmental conditions.

That could make the Essential Solar Security Camera particularly useful in locations where running power is inconvenient, or where regularly removing a camera for charging becomes a chore.

The camera records at 2K resolution at 24 frames per second and has a 130-degree field of view. It also supports dual-band Wi-Fi, automatically switching to the strongest available connection in an effort to maintain a reliable link.

For night monitoring, Arlo has included Colour Night Vision along with an integrated white LED spotlight. There is also two-way audio through the Arlo Secure app and a built-in siren that can be triggered remotely.

The Essential Solar Security Camera carries an IP65 weather-resistance rating, giving it protection against the heat, cold and rain it is likely to encounter outside. Arlo has also given the camera an ultra-slim design with three mounting holes, allowing users some flexibility when trying to balance sunlight exposure, Wi-Fi reception and the viewing angle they actually want.

Smart-home integration includes Amazon Alexa, Google Home, IFTTT and Samsung SmartThings.

Arlo Secure adds the smarter bits

As with much of Arlo’s current range, some of the more advanced features sit behind an Arlo Secure subscription.

When paired with an Arlo Secure Early Warning System plan, the camera can use features including Smart Object Recognition, Event Captions and Video Event History. Arlo says these tools are intended to provide additional context around detected activity and make it easier to understand what triggered an alert. Basic and Plus subscription tiers are available.

“Consumers want security cameras that can protect their property without the hassle of wires or dragging the ladder out for frequent charging,” said Matthew McRae, CEO of Arlo Technologies.

“With the Essential Solar Security Camera, we combined an integrated solar panel and the category’s most powerful battery to address common convenience needs and deliver protection that doesn’t run out.”

The combination makes plenty of sense on paper. Solar security cameras are not new, but integrating the panel into the camera keeps installation cleaner than designs requiring a separate panel and cable, while the large battery gives Arlo considerably more breathing room when the weather refuses to cooperate.

The Arlo Essential Solar Security Camera will be available in white for $189 RRP in Australia and $229 RRP in New Zealand. Pre-orders open 19 October 2026, with shipping scheduled to begin 2 November.
