Book 8 of the breakout Dungeon Crawler Carl series arrives on Audible today (12 May), continuing one of the fastest-growing LitRPG franchises in the world.

Born from gaming culture and fuelled by online fandom, Dungeon Crawler Carl has become a global success not by following traditional publishing rules, but by rewriting them.

At its core, the series mirrors the mechanics gamers already know and love: levelling systems, loot drops, dungeon runs, survival stakes and escalating reward loops, all wrapped in a narrative structure that feels closer to a live-service game than a conventional novel.

That crossover is central to the series’ appeal. Through platforms like Patreon and Reddit, creator Matt Dinniman shares chapters early and engages directly with fans, incorporating real-time feedback that can influence world-building, character arcs and progression systems. The result is a story that evolves alongside its community.

I always write, especially for LitRPG, for audio,” said Dinniman. “Audio is such an important part of this particular genre that if it was going to do well, audio was where it was going to hit.

The series has also found enormous traction through audio, with listeners spending more than 30 hours immersed in the *Dungeon Crawler Carl* universe and frequently replaying entries for comfort, humour and discovery, behaviour more commonly associated with gaming communities than traditional book audiences.

Growth for the franchise has been driven largely through memes, online forums, fan recommendations and social communities, helping establish *Dungeon Crawler Carl* as one of the defining crossover successes between gaming culture and publishing.

Behind the scenes, Dinniman says the scale of the universe-building process has become increasingly complex.

I have an Excel spreadsheet that every time something new gets added, whether it’s a new spell or a new character, I put all the information into,” he said. “Then when I need that information, I pull it up and hope it doesn’t crash my computer. I have so many open loops right now and it’s very cumbersome.
