Apparently, it’s outdoor launch season. After years spent teaching robots to navigate our floors, smart-home brands are increasingly looking beyond the front door. On the first day of spring Roborock will join the charge onto Australian lawns.

On 1 September, Roborock launches six robotic lawn mowers across three families, ranging from the $1,409 RockNeo Q105 through to the rather serious $4,999 RockMow Z150.

It’s a natural evolution for a company best known for robot vacuums. The fundamental problem is remarkably similar: map an area, understand what’s around you, avoid things you shouldn’t hit and repeatedly cover the bits you’re supposed to.

Except lawns aren’t nice flat living-room floors. There are slopes, trees, garden beds, pets, people, weather and patchy satellite reception to contend with. Which makes what is happening inside these machines arguably more interesting than the spinning blades underneath them.

No wire required

One significant change from the robotic lawn mowers of old is what you don’t have to install.

Roborock’s new range doesn’t rely on physical boundary wires buried or pegged around the lawn. Instead, its mowers use automatic mapping and environmental perception to work out where they’re supposed to go, with multi-zone management and custom mowing patterns handled through the Roborock app.

For most models, Roborock calls the navigation system Sentisphere Environmental Perception, combining RTK positioning with VSLAM vision.

RTK provides centimetre-level positioning when conditions are favourable, while the vision system provides another source of spatial information as the mower makes its way around the yard.

The Z120 LiDAR takes a different approach, but we’ll get to that.

RockNeo Q Series: the starting point

At the accessible end are the RockNeo Q105 and Q110, priced at $1,409 and $1,899 respectively.

They’re designed for lawns up to 500m² and 1,000m² and combine RTK and VSLAM navigation with Roborock’s AI-powered smart mapping and Sentisphere environmental perception.

Both are rear-wheel drive and use a three-blade cutting system covering cutting heights from 20mm to 60mm.

There’s support for up to 15 mowing zones, night mowing and obstacle recognition, while Roborock also includes hedgehog protection across the range.

The idea here is fairly straightforward: map the lawn, tell the robot how you’d like it maintained and let it get on with the job.

RockMow S Series gets more serious about the finish

Moving up a tier brings the RockMow S108 and S115, priced at $1,999 and $2,499.

They’re rated for lawns up to 800m² and 1,500m² respectively and retain RTK and VSLAM navigation while adding features aimed at producing a more refined finish.

That includes a higher-torque motor, protective blade guard, electric cutting-height adjustment, pattern cutting and sliding-disc traction.

There’s also a standard edge-mowing kit, addressing one of the less glamorous realities of robotic lawn care: having a robot mow the lawn isn’t quite as impressive if you still have to wander around afterwards trimming all the edges yourself.

Roborock is making a particular point of edge performance across the range. Its floating cutting deck is designed to follow changes in the terrain, while its higher-end system can bring the cutting disc within a claimed 3cm of vertical boundaries.

The S Series also gets a ring-light status indicator for seeing what the mower is doing at a glance.

Then there’s the RockMow Z120 LiDAR

This is where things get particularly interesting.

The RockMow Z120 LiDAR, priced at $3,499, replaces the RTK-based positioning used elsewhere in the range with LiDAR and VSLAM navigation.

Roborock’s Sentisphere LiDAR system combines a 360-degree 3D LiDAR sensor with dual-camera vision, continuously scanning the mower’s surroundings and building 3D point-cloud data to understand the environment around it.

That also means the Z120 isn’t as dependent on satellite reception for positioning.

That’s potentially significant in real-world gardens where trees, buildings and other obstructions can make satellite visibility less than ideal. Roborock also says the system can operate in low-light conditions.

The Z120 is designed for lawns up to 2,000m² and can mow at a claimed rate of up to 160m² per hour.

It moves to four-wheel drive and can tackle slopes of up to 80%, while its six-blade system provides cutting heights from 20mm to 70mm.

Roborock claims around 80 minutes of mowing from a charge, with a full recharge taking approximately 50 minutes.

There’s AI automatic mapping, support for up to 15 zones, night mowing, rain and freeze sensors, plus Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and 4G connectivity. Amazon Alexa and Google Home integration are supported too.

Got 5,000 square metres of grass?

Then Roborock would like $4,999, please.

At the top of the Australian lineup sits the RockMow Z150, a mower for people whose definition of “backyard” is considerably more ambitious than ours.

The Z150 is rated to cover lawns up to 5,000m² and increases mowing efficiency to a claimed 250m² per hour.

Interestingly, it doesn’t use the Z120’s LiDAR navigation. Instead, the Z150 combines RTK positioning with VSLAM.

It retains four-wheel drive and the claimed 80% slope capability, but gets a larger 10Ah battery to keep it working across substantially larger areas.

Roborock says a full charge takes around 70 minutes and provides up to 130 minutes of mowing.

The six-blade system cuts a 24cm path with electrically adjustable heights between 20mm and 70mm. Pattern cutting, automatic mapping, 15-zone scheduling, night mowing and weather sensors are also included.

What happens when someone — or something — gets in the way?

Putting an autonomous machine fitted with spinning blades into the backyard makes obstacle detection rather more consequential than stopping a robot vacuum from eating a charging cable.

Roborock’s vision-based obstacle avoidance system is designed to recognise objects including people and pets and adjust the mower’s path around them.

There are physical safeguards too.

Lift, tilt and bumper sensors are designed to stop blade movement if the mower is picked up or tilted, while rain and freeze sensors can interrupt mowing when conditions become unsuitable.

And given these are machines worth anywhere from $1,409 to almost $5,000 that spend their working lives outside, theft hasn’t been ignored either. Roborock’s anti-theft system includes an alarm, PIN-code locking and GPS compatibility for tracking.

Your lawn, there’s an app for that

Naturally, Roborock wants the lawn mower to become another part of the smart home.

The Roborock app provides mapping and zone management, mowing schedules, cutting-height adjustment and mower status information from your phone.

There’s also an ecosystem of accessories including replacement blades, a mower garage, rough-terrain wheels, extension cables and positioning accessories.

That last part could become important.

A robot vacuum lives a comparatively sheltered life. A robotic mower is being asked to operate outdoors around dirt, moisture, grass clippings, temperature changes and uneven ground, potentially for years. After-sales support and the availability of replacement consumables matter rather more when you’re dropping several thousand dollars on one.

Roborock’s next battleground is outside

There’s a certain inevitability to robot vacuum companies looking beyond the four walls of the house.

In fact, Roborock itself describes the move as going from **”Indoor Mastery to Outdoor Innovation”**.

Marketing language aside, there’s something to it.

The technology these companies have spent years developing — autonomous navigation, mapping, computer vision, obstacle recognition, route planning and app-based automation — has applications well beyond vacuuming floors.

The lawn is simply a considerably less controlled environment in which to prove it works.

And Roborock isn’t arriving quietly. Six models covering lawns from 500m² through to 5,000m² suggests Australia isn’t being treated as a small-scale experiment.

Nor is Roborock alone.

With more robot-vacuum brands heading for Australian gardens this spring, the robot wars are escaping the living room.
