Dual monitor setups is pretty much the bare essentials for most people these days. Aside from wasting a lot of precious desk real estate, sitting monitors directly on the desk surface is awful ergonomics. The smart play is to invest in a monitor arm, but not all monitor arms are born equal. This review is even more relevant as Australia heads into these uncharted social distancing territories and mass work from home. What does DRN think of these in the home office?
First Impressions
To be honest, when I started unboxing the Flexmount Duo, I thought I was lifting out a set of Alaskan King Crab claws. They were packed fully laid out, but instead of red chitin they are matt black and made from ultra-durable aluminium alloy and steel.
Gelid Solutions provides a complete package with the Flexmount Duo, the options for both edge mount and grommet clamps, Allen keys, screw driver and all the necessary bits and bobs to get things up and running without raiding the toolbox. A small but adequate instruction manual helps to get everything up and running quickly – at least for the assembly of the main event. The rest of it you are largely left on your own to discover. Note to self though, that piece that was dropped on the floor unnoticed, it fits the gap in the collar between the swivel and the mounting arm perfect ….
At the base of the Flexmount Duo is a built-in 2-port USB 3.0 hub.
In Use
I needed the Flexmount Duo in an edge mount configuration. The manual helpfully identifies all the loose bits and bobs, which is then referenced in the diagrams. The edge mount itself only took a few minutes to assemble and secured to the desk. The monitor arms themselves are a little unwieldy to manoeuver at first, but once the first monitor is affixed to the VESA mounts, it gets a little easier to position them to mount the second monitor.
All in all the Flexmount Duo with two monitors using an edge mount took me about 5 minutes. Full disclosure though, I have had a lot of practice assembling and disassembling monitor arms over the years. That said, the Flexmount Duo should take no more than 15 minutes to put together.
The Flexmount Duo easily accommodates my partner’s setup of one 27″ and a 23″ monitors. The setup has up to 105° tilt, 180° swivel and 360° rotation, making it immensely flexible to get your ergonomics just right. This becomes important as this workstation will ultimately be shared between my partner and Master J, the last thing we need is to spend too much time re-positioning the monitors.
Running the cables through the cable management channel on the other hand …. is something that takes me longer than it should, but that is just my OCD kicking in. Both sections of the monitor arms have channels for running cables through. The lower section of the arms has a plastic cover with a screw to hold it in place, once the screw is removed, there is a deep channel separated by a flange in the middle to feed your output and power leads in.
The upper arm section has a plastic cover that can just be popped off without tools. This part is naturally a bit smaller, but there is just enough space to run the two leads. I can probably just squeeze in a USB cable if I am inclined. There are two pairs of plastic guide pins inside this part, I broke one of them off but no harm done. Once in though, it is a set and forget and really unless you are changing your digital output cable, there is very little reasons to play with it.
The Flexmount Duo feature gas spring arms which can support up to 8kg per arm. It is definitely rock solid when positioned and does not drift or move. It was simple enough to position both monitors and to move them around to suit as I work. It did not require any excessive force to get the arms to move. The tension can be easily adjusted with the provided tools.
Other Features
The edge clamps or grommet mounts are adjustable to suit tables between 10-100mm thickness. The VESA mounts supports both 75x75mm and 100x100mm.
Gripes
Rubber flange comes off the plate pretty easily during the install process. It is not the end of the world but something to keep in mind.
The VESA mounts are fixed to the arm. In order to affix the monitors, you will have to lay the monitors down and do it flat on the table first.
Conclusions
The Gelid Flexmount Duo is a solid dual monitor arm. Installation was a breeze, it looks good and works perfectly well. The two USB 3.0 ports at the base is a nice touch. The gas springs does make everything move smoothly and without fuss.
From an ergonomic perspective, the flexibility of the Flexmount Duo makes it simple to position everything just right. Given that Australia is facing an uncertain future, with many businesses mandating working from home, it is important to be more aware of the ergonomics of your home setup.
