The Kobo Remote is Rakuten Kobo’s first official wireless page-turning accessory, designed specifically for Kobo e-readers with Bluetooth support.
It launched globally in late 2025 at around AU$44.95, and promptly disappeared from shelves faster than a bestseller in an airport bookshop. Restocks are rolling into early 2026, which tells you everything you need to know about how many readers have decided that tapping a screen is simply too much effort. Rather than relying on physical screen taps like many third-party solutions, the Kobo Remote connects via Bluetooth directly to the e-reader, resulting in a cleaner, simpler experience that feels thoughtfully integrated … and I am here for it!!!!
Design and First Impressions: Ergonomics for the Avid Reader
Build Quality and Hardware Quirks
That said, the build is not entirely without quirks. I found the battery compartment cover a bit difficult to open, turning a simple AAA replacement into a small test of patience and fingernail resilience. The overall grip and weight feel well balanced once the battery is in. It is a little larger than I expected, but I am not complaining – that’ll make it easier to find when I inevitably put it down somewhere and quickly forget where that ‘somewhere’ is!
Compatibility: Which Kobo Models Support the Remote?
Compatibility is refreshingly straightforward. If your Kobo e-reader has Bluetooth, it will work. This includes the Kobo Clara 2E, Clara BW, Clara Colour, Libra 2, Libra Colour, Sage, Elipsa, and Elipsa 2E. Pairing is quick and painless, with the remote appearing almost instantly in the Kobo’s Bluetooth list and connecting with minimal fuss. Older Kobo models without Bluetooth are left out, which is unfortunate but not exactly shocking, much like discovering a paperback does not support audiobooks.
Setup and Connectivity: Effortless Bluetooth Integration
Ease of use is one of the remote’s strongest points. I am absolutely serious about this. The setup was the easiest, most straightforward and simple I have ever done. So much so, that I wondered if I had missed something – did it really connect via Bluetooth that effortlessly?! Setup involves pressing the pairing button at the top and following a few on-screen prompts, after which the remote generally reconnects automatically when the e-reader wakes. Once it is set up, it fades into the background, doing its job quietly and efficiently.
Real-World Performance: Hands-Free Reading in Practice
In daily use, the Kobo Remote does exactly what it promises. Page turning is reliable and responsive, with roughly a one-second response time that feels natural and unhurried, much like turning a real page without the paper cut risk. Press the large button on the top to move forward through the book. Press the smaller button on the bottom to move backward through the book. It could not be easier. It shines in hands-free scenarios such as eating chocolate while reading, drinking wine while reading, reading in bed, following a recipe while cooking, or reading on a treadmill if you enjoy combining literature with questionable life choices.
Battery Life: Reliable and Low-Maintenance
Battery life is reassuringly old-school. The remote uses a single removable AAA battery, which Kobo suggests can last weeks or even months thanks to Bluetooth Low Energy. This choice will delight anyone who values longevity and the ability to swap batteries instantly, although it may mildly disappoint those who prefer everything to charge via USB-C and feel personally betrayed by disposable batteries.
Minor Drawbacks to Consider
There are a few quirks worth mentioning. Keeping Bluetooth active can slightly delay wake-from-sleep times, adding a couple of seconds before the e-reader is ready to go – so minimal that I almost didn’t think it was worth mentioning. Occasionally, the remote may continue to turn pages if the device falls asleep at an inopportune moment, resulting in accidental progress through several pages and a brief sense of narrative whiplash. The battery hatch remains stubborn, and the button clicks are on the louder side, which can be satisfying or mildly irritating depending on whether you are reading alone or next to someone who believes silence is sacred. For me – the sound is satisfying 🙂
Final Verdict: Peak Literary Laziness Achieved
So, is it worth it? For dedicated Kobo users, the answer is a confident yes. The Kobo Remote is not revolutionary, but it finally delivers an official solution to a long-requested feature: wireless page turning without fuss. It is well made, easy to pair, and genuinely improves the reading experience for anyone who spends long stretches immersed in books.
Its strengths lie in official integration, comfortable ergonomics, reliable Bluetooth performance, and long battery life. Its weaknesses are a poorly designed battery door and for some people (my co-workers wondered what the soft clicking noise was, so I was effectively busted reading at work!) buttons that can be a little too enthusiastic about announcing themselves. It is ideal for avid readers who use their Kobo frequently at home, in bed, on a stand, or in any situation where repeated screen tapping feels less like engagement and more like a plot obstacle. In short, it is a small accessory that enables peak literary laziness, and that might be its greatest achievement.
Now to remember to pack the remote along with my Kobo Clara (stacked full of reading delights!) so that I will have hours of clicking and reading to entertain me as I fly to Europe for Christmas!
