This one is quite a bit out of the usual DRN wheelhouse, but the stars aligned so here I am. The Sven’s Island products are about as far removed from a tech gadget as it gets, but technology doesn’t solve every problem. Instead, the Miracle Manuka Daily Defence Cream focuses on keeping skin hydrated, healthy and protected every day, while the Miracle Manuka Flare Relief Balm is designed to soothe dry, irritated skin when flare-ups occur. So, do they live up to the claims?
Sven’s Island is a New Zealand skincare company specialising in steroid-free products for dry and eczema-prone skin.
Why We Tested Sven’s Island Miracle Manuka
We started noticing that little Miss Arraiya had patches of dry skin, particularly around her calves where rough, scaly areas had always been noticeable.
We have tried many things – Ego, QV, Aveeno, even Lucas Pawpaw Ointment. We also changed body washes several times to rule out irritation from soaps.
Our GP eventually prescribed Advantan, a topical corticosteroid used to reduce skin inflammation. While it helped during flare-ups, it didn’t seem to provide a lasting solution once treatment stopped. We have not been using this for over 18 months now.
Most days the patches don’t bother her, but on other days they become quite itchy, especially at night. There are also little bumps on her arms that would occasionally irritate her.
So when an opportunity came up to try Sven’s Island products, I realised I had the perfect opportunity to put the products through a genuine longer-term test.
Daily Defence Cream vs Flare Relief Balm: What’s the Difference?
Although they’re designed to work together, the two products have different roles.
Miracle Manuka Daily Defence Cream is an everyday moisturising and protective cream. It’s intended to hydrate dry skin, support the skin barrier, soothe minor irritation and help keep skin healthy before problems develop. Think of it as the daily maintenance product.
Miracle Manuka Flare Relief Balm is a richer, more concentrated treatment for areas that are already irritated. It’s designed to provide relief during flare-ups of dry, itchy or inflamed skin, creating a protective barrier while helping calm redness and discomfort.
Ingredients and Steroid-Free Formula
According to Sven’s Island, the biggest point of difference is its steroid-free, plant-based formulation centred around Mānuka and Kānuka oils. Rather than relying on corticosteroids to suppress inflammation during flare-ups, the company says its products are designed to support the skin barrier while providing long-lasting moisturisation.
The formulation relies heavily on botanical oils, including Mānuka, Kānuka, Rosemary, Palmarosa and Blue Chamomile. While these contribute to the distinctive botanical scent, it’s worth remembering that people with very sensitive skin can sometimes react to essential oils. If you’re unsure, it’s always worth performing a small patch test before applying any new skincare product more broadly.

- Organic Mānuka Leaf Oil – valued for its antimicrobial properties.
- Organic Kānuka Leaf Oil – traditionally used for its calming and anti-inflammatory properties.

One of Sven’s Island’s biggest marketing points is that the products are steroid free. That naturally raises the question: why is that important?
Topical corticosteroids such as Advantan are extremely effective at reducing inflammation during flare-ups, but they’re generally intended to manage symptoms rather than serve as an everyday skincare solution.
Sven’s Island takes a different approach. The company says its steroid-free formulation is designed to support the skin’s natural barrier and address factors associated with recurring eczema. Whether that translated into real-world results was exactly what I wanted to find out.
Three Weeks of Real-World Testing
Sven’s Island recommends using the products consistently for three weeks before judging the results, so that’s exactly what we did.
To put things into perspective, Arraiya has a fairly active routine. She has a weekly sports day at school, swimming lessons and hip-hop classes. Between chlorine, sweat and general eight-year-old adventures, her skin gets a pretty good workout.
The first thing we noticed was the smell. The cream has a very distinctive Manuka aroma that reminded me of concentrated tea tree oil. Personally, I found it quite strong, although I freely admit I have a bit of history with tea tree oil that probably makes me more sensitive than most. Interestingly, Arraiya wasn’t bothered by it in the slightest.
The Daily Defence Cream itself is pleasantly light. Unlike some creams that come out of a tube feeling thick and heavy, this spreads easily across the skin and absorbs with very little effort.
The Flare Relief Balm is the complete opposite. It’s incredibly dense – almost like crystallised honey. You’ll need to apply a bit of pressure to work some out of the tub.
Our routine became simple: after every evening shower we applied the Daily Defence Cream over her body, then used the Flare Relief Balm specifically on the dry patches on her legs.
The morning after our first application, we noticed something unexpected. Both products still felt as though they were present on her skin. Despite a night’s sleep full of tossing, turning and tangled blankets, her skin remained noticeably moisturised rather than dry.
We continued that routine every night for just over three weeks.
From a moisturising perspective, the results were genuinely impressive. Arraiya’s skin became noticeably softer to the touch, and during the entire testing period she didn’t complain about waking overnight because of itchy legs.
The rough, scaly patches themselves, however, remained to a degree. They were less visible but could still be felt.
That’s an important distinction.
While Sven’s Island positions these products as being suitable for eczema-prone skin, Arraiya has not been diagnosed with eczema. According to her GP, her dry patches and bumps appear to be related to a hereditary skin condition rather than eczema specifically.
For us, the products significantly improved skin hydration and comfort, but they didn’t eliminate the underlying skin texture.

Final Verdict: Is Sven’s Island Miracle Manuka Worth Buying?
The Sven’s Island Miracle Manuka range didn’t completely resolve Arraiya’s skin condition, but that doesn’t necessarily reflect on the products themselves. According to her GP, her dry patches appear to be hereditary rather than eczema-related, so it would have been unrealistic to expect a moisturiser and balm to eliminate the underlying condition.
What they did do exceptionally well was improve her comfort. Throughout the three-week test, the overnight itchiness that had been bothering her disappeared, and I no longer found her sitting up in bed scratching at her legs.
Both products also delivered excellent long-lasting moisturisation. Even the following morning, her skin still felt hydrated, and over the course of the trial it became noticeably softer and smoother to the touch.
The rough, scaly patches and small bumps remain, so we’ll continue exploring the treatment options recommended by her GP. However, I fully intend to keep the Daily Defence Cream as part of her regular skincare routine, with the Flare Relief Balm ready whenever her skin becomes particularly dry or irritated.
If you’re looking for products to deeply moisturise dry skin and provide lasting comfort, Sven’s Island has certainly impressed us. Just keep your expectations realistic if you’re dealing with an underlying skin condition that requires medical treatment.
We used it on our eight-year-old daughter during this review without any issues, but every child’s skin is different. If your child has eczema or another diagnosed skin condition, it’s always worth speaking to your GP or dermatologist before introducing a new skincare product.
For our family, this wasn’t a replacement for medical advice or prescription treatment. Instead, it became an effective part of Arraiya’s daily skincare routine.
A Second Family’s Early Experience
Just as I was wrapping up this review, Arraiya mentioned that one of her school friends had also recently started using Sven’s Island Miracle Manuka.
I’ve seen this child previously with significant itchy rashes on his face. While the family has only recently begun using the products, they’ve already overcome one challenge – the child is happy to apply the cream himself.
From my own observations, the flare-up appears less severe than I’d previously seen. That said, it’s important to note the family is also using a prescribed topical steroid, so it’s impossible to attribute any improvement solely to the Sven’s Island products.
It reinforces something I’ve mentioned throughout this review: every child’s skin is different. While our experience centred on improving hydration and comfort, this family’s early experience suggests the products may complement an existing treatment plan, rather than replace it.
