The security camera market is crowded. Over the years I’ve seen genuine innovation, clever engineering and plenty of outside-the-box thinking. I’ve also seen manufacturers chase ever larger megapixel numbers without really improving the experience. Reolink has been one of the few brands that has consistently focused on solving real problems rather than simply winning the specification race. After reviewing the Elite Floodlight and the TrackFlex Floodlight, the latest Reolink product to land on my desk is the OMVI 3i PoE.
It demonstrates something I’ve increasingly noticed about Reolink over the past year. Rather than producing a dozen cameras that differ only by sensor resolution or lens angle, the company appears to be building products around specific use cases. The Elite Floodlight addressed one problem, the TrackFlex another, and now the OMVI 3i tackles a completely different challenge.
While I appreciate that not everyone has a home network capable of Power over Ethernet (PoE), Reolink hasn’t put all its eggs in one basket. The OMVI 3i is also available as a WiFi model, offering essentially the same hardware and features for homes where running Ethernet simply isn’t practical.
Why the Reolink OMVI 3i Is Different
The OMVI 3i Series (covering both the PoE and WiFi models) features an 18MP triple-lens system.
Two 5MP sensors are stitched together to create a continuous 10MP 180° panoramic view, while a third 8MP (4K) pan-and-tilt camera actively follows subjects around the scene.
Together they provide both a constant overview and detailed close-up tracking. Reolink calls this SyncTrack – the panoramic cameras act as permanent spotters while the pan-and-tilt camera automatically tracks activity without sacrificing overall coverage
Traditional PTZ cameras have one unavoidable weakness: when they’re looking left, they’re no longer watching right. Every time the camera pans to follow someone, another part of the scene is temporarily left unobserved.
It’s a bit like a stealth game where you wait for the security camera to sweep away before making your move.
At first glance it looks like another security camera. In reality, it’s attempting to solve one of the oldest compromises in surveillance: how do you track a subject without stopping watching everything else?
The traditional answer is simple: spend more money, use more mounting space and install additional cameras.
That’s the problem the OMVI 3i is designed to solve. Its dual panoramic cameras provide a permanent wide-angle overview of the entire scene, while the third pan-and-tilt camera is free to zoom in, follow movement and capture detail. Instead of sacrificing situational awareness for close-up tracking, it gives you both at the same time.
Why I Chose the Reolink OMVI 3i PoE Model
For this review I specifically requested the Power over Ethernet (PoE) model. My home already has Ethernet cabling in key locations and a Zyxel GS1915-24EP PoE core switch, making it the most appropriate version for my setup.
My opinions on PoE haven’t changed since I reviewed the Zyxel GS1915-24EP back in September 2023: “For argument sake, security cameras are best to be hardwired to maintain connectivity, minimise potential for interference (either environmental or nefarious). Having to run both power and ethernet to each device increases the cost of installation. But if all you need is a single ethernet cable to the device, it is far simpler and easier to do.”
Simply put, hardwired cameras are more resilient to interference, don’t suffer from Wi-Fi congestion, and remove another variable from a security system. Modern Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7 are excellent technologies, but a cable still offers the most consistent connection for a device that’s expected to operate 24 hours a day.
Another advantage is continuous operation. Unlike battery-powered cameras that often rely on motion-triggered wake-ups to conserve energy, both the PoE and WiFi versions of the OMVI 3i remain powered at all times. That allows them to continuously monitor, track activity and record without needing to wake from a low-power state.
If you’re a power user, the wired Reolink cameras also support RTSP and ONVIF, making them easy to integrate with Home Assistant, Frigate, third-party NVRs and NAS devices. That flexibility is one of the reasons I’ve continued to invest in the Reolink ecosystem.
Installation and Mounting Considerations
Like all surveillance cameras, positioning requires some planning.
For the Omvi 3i, this step is actually much more important. Ideally the Omvi 3i needs to be mounted as close to the edge under the eave as possible.
Because the panoramic lenses have a fixed upward angle, mounting position becomes critical. Install the camera too far back under the eave and you’ll capture more soffit than useful scene. Move it too far forward and you’ll gain more sky than necessary.
That said, it also means if I move it closer to the edge, I am going to get coverage of the sky instead. Getting coverage of the sky though, would be a lesser evil than having the IR bounce back and wiping out the panoramic image at night.
Image Quality and Triple-Lens Performance
In previous reviews, I have written at length about sensor sizes and image resolution. The pairing needs to make sense – the megapixel count is only part of a story.
Specification wise, the Omvi 3i offers the following:

Do the sensor sizes match the resolution for the best outcome? Yes.
The panoramic camera at 1/2.7″ + 5MP is a common pairing for wide-angle surveillance cameras. Similarly the PTZ at 1/2.8″ + 8MP is one of the most common combinations in 4K security cameras today.
Reolink has gone with a smart division of labour. The panoramic cameras are optimised for coverage, while the PT camera is optimised for detail.
That’s why the panoramic camera spreads 10MP across a 180° field of view – it is designed for situational awareness. The PTZ camera concentrates its 8MP into a much narrower field that is better suited for details. The result is lower pixel density across the panoramic image, but significantly higher detail wherever the tracking camera is looking.
And this is where things get interesting when you dig a little deeper. Looking back at the Reolink cameras that I have previously covered – Elite Floodlight and TrackFlex Floodlight. And now with the Omvi 3i, you can see Reolink’s design philosophy evolving.
The Elite Floodlight focused on seeing everything with a fixed panoramic view. The TrackFlex added pan-and-tilt with a telephoto lens to actively follow subjects. The OMVI 3i combines both concepts, maintaining a permanent panoramic overview while dedicating a separate 4K camera to tracking and close-up detail.
After several weeks of living with the OMVI 3i, the main takeaway was how natural the system fit into my surveillance strategy. Having a permanent panoramic overview while the tracking camera was ready to investigate movement meant I never felt like the camera was “looking away” from the rest of the property. It is a benefit that becomes immediately obvious in day-to-day use.
AI Features, Detection and Smart Alerts
Aside from the hardware implementation, the Omvi 3i came out of the box loaded with features.
One of my criticisms of the TrackFlex Floodlight was the absence of Line Crossing, Zone Intrusion and Zone Loitering alerts (at least in the Android app at the time). I’m pleased to see those capabilities return on the OMVI 3i because they’re genuinely useful for reducing nuisance notifications and tailoring alerts to the way a property is used.
In addition, a couple of beta features have made their way in: Forgotten Object and Object Removal.
Forgotten Object: You set a zone in the field of view, and if an object is found in the zone, it will trigger an alert. This could be used to notify you when a parcel has been left at the front door without relying on person detection alone.
Object Removal: Works in reverse. If an object is removed, it triggers an alert. A useful application of this would be to monitor where your car is parked on the driveway. Expanding on that, it can keep an eye on your bicycle, or a trailer, or even a robotic lawnmower.
Reolink hasn’t reinvented the detection engine here, instead carrying across the mature features and core functions from previous cameras. There was no issues with detection behaviour, picking up motion as configured by me regardless of the lighting or weather conditions.
A really nice new feature is Pinpoint – you can just tap anywhere on the panoramic image and the PTZ camera will automatically track to that point.
The AI still feels like it’s on training wheels. It produced more animal detections than were genuine, and on the odd occasion even decided that I qualified as one. I’ve been called many things before…
Limitations and Things to Consider
The PT camera doesn’t have optical zoom and relies entirely on digital zoom. That’s worth understanding before you buy.
It’s designed to maintain situational awareness while providing enough detail to identify activity around a typical home. If you need to read number plates from 40 metres away, this probably is not going to be the right fit for purpose.
The other issue is mounting angle. With the coverage, I think the camera should be mounted with about a 10 degree tilt downwards. The panoramic cameras capture a little too much of the soffit unless the camera is angled downward. As can be seen in the sample image, it also causes the IR to bounce back and essentially trash the details in the image.
I would probably 3D print a wedge, or find a scrap of wood to give it a tilt.
Final Verdict: Should You Buy the Reolink OMVI 3i?
A few weeks ago I shared an editorial on How to Build a Complete Home Security Ecosystem with Reolink Cameras, AI and Local Storage with a layered approach. Layer one is about perimeter awareness, and layer two is securing entry points.
With its unique triple-lens configuration, the Reolink OMVI 3i sits neatly between layer one and layer two of that security strategy. The PT camera edges towards layer two, but doesn’t quite replace a dedicated entry-point camera.
The reason I say that is the digital only zoom. Yes you can track movement and get pretty good details, however if you need to zoom in for details, you are relying on interpolation and may not get what you need.
As I said though, layered approaches. The Reolink Omvi 3i does not replace the need for a close in monitoring solution such as a doorbell video camera, and / or an E1 Outdoor CX. But it is a single device that is designed to protect the perimeter and give better coverage in the layer between the ingress and your entry points.
