Q: Why did the computer go to the dentist?
A: It had Bluetooth!
#micdrop #illseemyselfout
Seriously though … the Oclean X Ultra S does have Bluetooth connectivity and a suite of other tricks to keep your teeth and gums in tip top condition.
The toothbrush
Available in black and green, the matt finish surface means when the toothbrush is wet it doesn’t slip out of my grip. It has a nice weight to it when held (approx 110g), a small touchscreen on the handle and a light up function on the base as a visual cue to accompany verbal prompts about usage and battery life. It is sleek in design – no grooves or ridges for toothpaste to get stuck in and boasts a mould resistant coating.
The Oclean X Ultra S comes with:
- a USB charging base,
- a handy travel case,
- a magnetic wall mount making it easy to keep both bench and sink areas clutter free,
- a quick start guide, and
- three brush heads.
Three styles of brush heads are included. They all have silicone back and sides. You’ll never need to remember when to change your brush head, as the app tells you when it time for a new one. Replacement brush heads for the series toothbrush cost $49.95 and can be found on their website.
The toothbrush in action
Q: Which teeth do you have to brush?
A: Just the ones you want to keep!
When you start the toothbrush, an orange mouth shows on the touchscreen on the toothbrush handle. Gradually the teeth on the screen turn from orange to white as you progress with your brushing. This is useful to indicate where you might have poor brushing coverage. Having this information on the handle is convenient. If you wanted more detailed data about your brushing technique you could go to the app. In the app, the toothbrush tracks 8 zones – the inner and outer surfaces of the teeth in the four sections of the mouth. Note it doesn’t track the biting surfaces.
I was surprised by how noisy the toothbrush is when in use because of the bone conduction. I had to call out to my husband to ask if he could hear the toothbrush from downstairs. He couldn’t. Never having used an electric toothbrush before, the noise inside my head (the toothbrush … not the voices!) was disconcerting for the first few uses, but I have quickly gotten used to the sound.
Little voices coming from within!
The brush uses bone conduction technology to give information about brushing technique for the audible alerts. The toothbrush user will hear ‘voice alerts’ and see the light at the base of the toothbrush change from white to red, for:
- pressure when brushing – a verbal prompt alerts “over pressure”,
- brushing too quickly, prompting you to slow down the movements of the brush across your teeth, and
- when to move on to the next section of your mouth.
Unlike the voices in my head, it was easy to disable the voice prompts using the app.
However, I can see how the voice prompts would assist someone with a visual impairment for whom the screen would be difficult to read, and the light prompts could alert a hearing impaired user about a need to change brushing technique.
The tech behind the toothbrush
Q: If Jenny has 32 candy bars and eats 19 of them, what does Jenny have?
A: Probably cavities.
You however won’t have cavities due to the incredible amount of tech options built into the Oclean X Ultra S!
There are five settings accessible on the handle: whitening, unlimited clean, exclusive mode, sunrise soothing and sunset clearout. Further to that, there are many more settings to be found on the app:
- standard cleaning
- strong whitening
- super whitening
- sensitive cleaning
- gentle teeth spa
- standard teeth spa
- gum care cleaning
- newbie whitening
- braces cleaning
- travel
- strong cleaning
- post wash sensitivity
- super cleaning
Through the app, you can customise your own cleaning setting (pressure, time etc) and name it whatever you find helpful e.g. “fancy fangs” or “tooth-hurty”. However to access your customised setting when you go to brush your pearly whites, you’ll need access this on the toothbrush via the “exclusive” mode. That is, your cool setting name does not appear on the toothbrush handle.
I tested the five modes on the handle and would be hard pressed to tell you the difference between them. Perhaps I don’t have the oral sensitivity required to pick up on subtle differences in the settings. Overall, I don’t think it really matters which setting you use, or customise. Regular, proper brushing technique is what contributes to good oral hygiene … and given how easy and fun it is to use the Oclean X Ultra S toothbrush cleaning regularly won’t be a problem.
Connectivity and data collection
Q: Why is it sometimes necessary to get a second opinion from a dentist?
A: Because each dentist has their own floss-ophy!
You won’t be seeking a second opinion about the Oclean X Ultra S toothbrush’s ability to connect to your devices. It is super simple. The toothbrush handle pairs via Bluetooth to the app on my phone in the normal way, but it can also connect to the internet via wifi. It’s not necessary to do either of these things, but if you like quantifying your health data, then go ahead!
The data your toothbrush collects about your brushing technique and frequency is retained in the handle for approximately 7 days, or until it has an opportunity to upload to the app.
Don’t chew on batteries, and other life advice
Suggested battery life before needing to be recharged is 40 days. Impressive. Due to the short review turnaround time, I was unable to test the battery life to that extent, but 7 days later I still haven’t needed to recharge.
The Oclean X Ultra S toothbrush comes with a USB charging stand. Additionally, it also has a stylish travel case that has a charging port in it, which takes a USB C cable (not supplied).
Sink your teeth into it!
The Oclean X Ultra S toothbrush is a gorgeous product to use. If you are into data and quantifying your health, then this will keep you occupied and happy. Just opening the packaging you know you are in the presence of quality, stylish engineering. The toothbrush feels beautiful to the touch, looks stunning, and leaves your teeth feeling like you’ve just left the dentist after a professional clean.
You can get your hands on the Oclean X Ultra S toothbrush for AUD$449.95 over here. Or you can throw your name into the ring here at DRN because we got one of these to hand out before Christmas.
With thanks to Oclean for the chance to review the X Ultra S!
