It’s been two days now! My new phone arrived last week, but I wasn’t home to take delivery. I finally picked it up before work yesterday, brought it home, gingerly unboxed it, and put it straight into its brand new, bright orange (Sierra Orange) Beats Rugged Case home!

I’ve had weird luck with phones. Usually, I get them, they’re shiny and perfect, I put them in a case, and then—inevitably—there’s one day I take them out to do something, and that’s when I damage them. Totally my fault, but lesson learned. Now, they stay in the case.

The Beats iPhone 17 Pro Max Rugged Case with MagSafe and Camera Control (say that five times fast!) is a soft-touch TPU case (a type of plastic, if you’re wondering) with a comfy microfibre lining to protect your investment. It’s MagSafe compatible, and I can confirm it has a super sturdy connection with my Belkin UltraCharge Mag-Charger (review coming soon!).

The case is “rugged,” but I’m not about to drop my phone on purpose to prove it. My previous case—a thinner Peak Design model made for my bike—handled plenty of knocks, but the Beats Rugged Case feels like a mini fortress without going over the top.

Here’s what Beats say about their design and testing:

The Beats iPhone 17 Pro Max Rugged Case with MagSafe and Camera Control has undergone thousands of hours of testing throughout the design and manufacturing process. Our rigorous testing simulates real-world use and beyond, including repeated drops, tumbles, scratch tests and a wide array of thermal, chemical and mechanical tests to help provide exceptional durability and protection.

The rugged polymer backing is complemented by additional impact-absorbing sidewalls and an enclosed bottom for enhanced device protection. The textured matte exterior provides extra grip and reduces signs of scratches, smudges and fingerprints, while the inner microfibre lining gently reduces surface scratches and abrasion.

Honestly, ask me again in six months — “Hey Simon, how’s that Beats case going?” (..sets reminder on phone to update photos in six months 😅).

I went with Sierra Orange after my 15-year-old told me not to get the orange iPhone (I got silver) and that I could “dress it up after the fact.” Smart advice from a teenager! It’s bright, but I really like it.

The case fits perfectly around the lock and volume buttons, the camera control button with its custom conductive layer, the mute switch, and even includes tiny sound vents near the USB-C port.

My thoughts:

It’s a solid, well-built case that feels like it could take a beating — perfect for protecting your very expensive “phone that’s now your whole world.” The textured grip keeps it steady in your hand, though it can be a bit slippery near the top edge. One downside: the added thickness means it no longer fits into my car’s NFC slot, so I’ll need a workaround there. Still, that’s the trade-off for serious protection. The case also extends just beyond the screen and camera, so you’re well covered on all fronts.

The Beats iPhone 17 Rugged Case with MagSafe & Camera Control has RRP A$129 and is available from Apple and Beats.

Early days, but I’m a big fan. It’s sturdy, thoughtfully designed, and feels ready for anything — including me. Nice work, Beats!
