There are plenty of power banks in the market, so what sets the Xiaomi UltraThin Magnetic Power Bank 5000 15W apart?
I just had a look in my work bag and in my desk drawers. I have power banks of all kind of sizes, dimensions and capacity lying around. Actually that is rather surprising since I tend to hand these out like lollies.
Design: The 6mm Ultra-Thin Advantage
But to answer that first question, none of them are in orange. My Xiaomi UltraThin comes in a gorgeous fun orange colourway, which matches the DRN orange very nicely.
On one side, it has a metallic finish with the Mi logo etched in.
On the business end is a more peach orange. This side has the Qi2 magnetic ring.
The other notable feature? It is just 6mm thick.
Yep. 5000 mAh in a 6mm thick package, Qi2 compatible.
As I was saying, I have (had) loads of power banks, including those that are specifically designed to be magnetically attached to my phone and give me freedom from cable while my phone charges on the go.
But none of them holds a candle to the Xiaomi. Measuring in at 98.5 x 71.5mm, it is narrower than my Pixel 8 Pro by a few millimetres on either side.
The game changing part? That 6mm thickness and a 98g weight.
Considering that the Pixel 8 Pro is 8.8mm thick, the Xiaomi UltraThin genuinely makes it so much more functional when in use.
Combined with the Pixel 8 Pro, the total weight would come in around the weight of a rugged phone – about 310g.
In use, I found the Xiaomi UltraThin so much less likely to get knocked out of alignment – an issue I have encountered with other power banks due to either thickness or weight or both.
Performance: Qi2 Magnetic Charging and Wired Speeds
Despite the slimness, Xiaomi has not skimp on the essentials – a USB-C port and a row of indicator lights, as well as a button to activate so you can check the battery level. Everything you would expect as part of the package.
Wireless charging maxes out at Qi2 standard – 15W. It does not meet Qi2.2 standard of 25W, which is hardly a surprise as that requires active cooling to maintain, which will also add bulk.
Wired charging tops out at 22.5W, and combined is rated for 7.5W wired and 5W wireless respectively.
Built-in Protections and Thermal Management
One thing to be aware of is that the Xiaomi Ultrathin will get warm in use, and the metallic enclosure is part of the heatsink. It does not get burning hot, but you will definitely notice it. On that note, you should keep it out of confined spaces when in use so that it can ventilate properly.
However, Xiaomi has a bunch of protections built into the unit.
- Electrostatic protection
- Input overvoltage protection
- Output overvoltage protection
- Over-temperature protection
- Output overcurrent protection
- Undervoltage protection
- Short-circuit protection
- Over-discharge protection
- Overcharge protection
- Foreign object detection
Pricing and Australian Availability
The Xiaomi UltraThin Magnetic Power Bank 5000 15W comes in Orange, Silver and Black colourways. The latter two have RRP A$129 and the Orange is a little more expensive at A$149. Until 31 March 2026, there is a nice and substantial launch promo that brings the price down to A$69.50 and $75.50 respectively.
If you find yourself needing to recharge your mobile on the go, this one has been the thinness one to cross my paths, and I love it. DRN Orange colourway not withstanding.
DRN would like to thank Xiaomi for providing the review unit.
