Renewable energy is increasingly sold as an integrated system, but most customers still encounter it as a collection of product specifications, online research and installer recommendations.
Sungrow‘s new Solar & Battery Experience Hub in Maroochydore is intended to make that system considerably more tangible.

Officially opened on 17 July, the facility is Sungrow’s first dedicated solar and battery experience centre in Australia. It allows homeowners, businesses, installers, community groups and potentially school groups to see working solar, battery storage, EV charging and energy-management technologies operating together in a real-world environment.
The Hub is also powered entirely by Sungrow’s own inverter and battery system, demonstrating how a commercial facility can use integrated renewable energy technologies to generate, store and manage its electricity.

Sunshine Coast Mayor Rosanna Natoli joined Sungrow Australia executives, industry representatives and members of the local community for the official opening.
Mayor Natoli described the centre as an opportunity for residents, businesses and students to engage directly with clean-energy technology, while also supporting local employment, skills development and sustainable infrastructure.

It is a fitting location. The Sunshine Coast already has strong residential solar adoption and an active renewable-energy sector, making it a logical place to explore whether a hands-on model can improve the way customers understand increasingly complex home-energy systems.

From product specifications to a working system

The Experience Hub is divided into three main areas.

The Sungrow Journey section covers the company’s history, technology development and presence in Australia. The Live Experience Area demonstrates residential solar, battery storage and EV charging, supported by real-time system monitoring. The Smart Hub Experience focuses on intelligent energy management, including battery optimisation, consumption monitoring and technologies intended to increase household energy independence.

Neil Yang, Channel Sales Manager at Sungrow Australia, said customers traditionally have limited opportunities to experience these systems before purchasing them.

They can research online, speak with an installer or compare product specifications, but rarely get to see how the components interact as a complete system.

The Hub is intended to support the full decision-making process, from selecting and configuring a system through to understanding backup functionality, monitoring tools and after-sales support.

It will also provide installers with somewhere to bring prospective customers and demonstrate the equipment under operating conditions.

That could be one of its most useful functions. Solar and battery systems are significant, long-term purchases, yet customers are often expected to understand concepts such as backup circuits, battery charging schedules, energy flows and Virtual Power Plants through diagrams and conversations alone.

Watching a system operate does not remove the complexity, but it can make the questions considerably easier to ask.

Engineering for Australian conditions

During a media discussion following the opening, I asked how Sungrow’s experience with systems deployed in Australian conditions had influenced its engineering, product development and service approach.

Scott Su, ETS Director at Sungrow Australia, said local regulation was a major influence.

Australian grid requirements and product standards continue to change, requiring manufacturers to develop new functions and update products to remain compliant. He also pointed to durability improvements intended to help equipment withstand severe weather, including cyclones and other environmental extremes.

Scott shared an example involving a homeowner following a major weather event in Queensland.

The homeowner contacted Sungrow because the property’s solar production appeared to be lower than normal. When the system was checked, the lower figure was not caused by a fault. The electricity grid had been unavailable, and the solar and battery system had been supplying the home independently for approximately a week.

Once the battery was fully charged, the solar system only needed to generate enough electricity to meet the home’s immediate load. As a result, its recorded production appeared lower than it would during normal grid-connected operation.

According to Scott, the homeowner had not realised the house had continued operating independently from the grid.

In another example, an installer used backup power from his own property to keep a neighbour’s fridge and freezer operating during an outage. A freezer containing premium groceries has a way of making energy resilience feel considerably less theoretical.

The examples illustrate that backup capability is not simply a specification. Its real value is found in how safely and predictably the system responds when the grid is unavailable.

Software is becoming part of the product

Some of the clearest evidence of Sungrow’s local product development came from its response to changing electricity tariffs.

Scott said the company regularly receives feedback from Australian installers, homeowners, retailers and business partners. This feedback can lead to new software and firmware functions.

He cited electricity plans that provide customers with several hours of free electricity during certain periods of the day.

Sungrow subsequently introduced a function through its monitoring app that allows homeowners to schedule forced battery charging during those periods. The stored energy can then be used after the free-electricity window ends.

The hardware installed on the wall may not have changed, but the way it participates in the electricity market has.

Sungrow says firmware updates can also bring new functions to systems that have already been installed for five or six years.

That changes the way battery and inverter systems should be evaluated. Hardware reliability and battery longevity remain important, but software support, cloud compatibility and continued product development are increasingly part of the ownership experience.

A system may remain physically operational for many years. Whether it continues to respond effectively to new tariffs, retailer programs and grid requirements will depend heavily on the support behind it.

AI, energy data and customer privacy

I also asked how Sungrow uses operational data and field feedback to improve reliability, diagnostics and customer support, including through artificial intelligence and machine learning.
Scott began his answer with cybersecurity and privacy.

Sungrow says Australian customer data is stored within Australia using local cloud infrastructure. The company has also developed an AI assistant known as Bubbly, which uses a ChatGPT model in the background.

Before operational information is sent to the third-party AI model, Sungrow says it passes through a filtering layer designed to remove sensitive customer details.
Information such as an exact address or email address can be removed, while broader location information and relevant system data are retained for analysis.

For example, a customer asking whether their solar production was normal could have the applicable production figures and general location sent for analysis without disclosing their precise identity.

Scott described AI assistants as advisers rather than decision-makers.

That distinction is particularly important for energy systems. AI may help customers interpret data, understand system behaviour or identify possible issues, but safety-critical control and operational decisions need clearer boundaries than a general-purpose conversational interface can provide.

Sungrow said it is continuing to monitor the technology as it develops.

For now, Bubbly appears to be positioned primarily as a way for customers to interact with energy information, rather than as an autonomous controller of the home.

The growing role of the cloud

My question about how Sungrow sees the balance developing between intelligence located within the inverter, battery or site and analysis performed through cloud platforms did not receive a direct answer.

The later discussion about Virtual Power Plants, however, provided some insight into the company’s direction.

Scott explained that earlier VPP installations could require a separate physical controller at the property. Sungrow is now increasingly supporting cloud-based integration.

A homeowner participating in a compatible VPP or electricity plan can authorise an aggregator or energy retailer through the Sungrow platform. The provider can then communicate with the system through the cloud, without requiring an additional dedicated controller to be installed.

This may also make it easier for customers to change providers. Rather than replacing physical hardware, the homeowner can revoke one provider’s access and authorise another through the app.

Local hardware still needs to manage solar generation, battery operation and backup functions reliably. The cloud increasingly provides the connection between that hardware and the wider energy market.

This creates convenience and flexibility, but it also makes questions about cybersecurity, data ownership, long-term platform support and offline operation increasingly important.
Those questions are not always prominent when a system is first purchased, but they may determine how useful it remains over the following decade.

From inverter supplier to energy-system provider

Sungrow entered the Australian market primarily known for its solar inverters.

Neil said the company now considers itself a solution provider rather than simply a hardware supplier.

That shift was visible throughout the Hub. Inverters, batteries, EV chargers, monitoring software and retailer integration are no longer being presented as isolated products. They are becoming parts of a coordinated energy ecosystem.

Neil identified vehicle-to-grid and vehicle-to-everything technologies, commonly known as V2G and V2X, as areas of future development.

The longer-term idea is that an electric vehicle could become another energy resource within the home. Where a fixed household battery is insufficient, energy stored in the vehicle may eventually support the property or participate in broader energy services.

Achieving that at scale will require compatible vehicles and chargers, regulatory support, retailer integration and agreement around battery warranties and customer control.
Nevertheless, it reflects the direction in which home-energy systems are moving: away from separate devices and toward coordinated generation, storage, transport and consumption.

Battery chemistry and Sungrow’s role

I asked which emerging battery chemistries, materials or manufacturing developments were most likely to shape the next generation of residential and commercial storage.
Scott was clear that Sungrow is a battery-system manufacturer rather than a battery-cell manufacturer.

The cells used in its products are sourced from specialist suppliers, meaning detailed developments in chemistry and cell production sit primarily with those companies.

Sungrow continues to monitor changes in battery technology and expects its systems to evolve as new cell designs become commercially available.

It was a narrower answer than the question invited, but also a realistic description of the company’s position in the supply chain.

Scott instead offered a broader forecast for the energy market. He expects more homes and commercial buildings to install solar and battery systems and become increasingly capable of supplying their own energy.

He described these buildings as potential “energy islands”, able to operate more independently while reducing some of the pressure on electricity networks.

The grid is unlikely to become an emergency-only service in the foreseeable future. Apartments, renters, shared infrastructure and properties without suitable rooftops ensure the transition will be more complicated than placing a battery on every building.

Even so, homes and businesses are clearly becoming more active participants in the energy system rather than passive consumers at the end of the network.

More than a showroom

Sungrow says it has operated in Australia for more than 14 years, with more than 600,000 residential and commercial installations nationally.

The company intends the Experience Hub to support customer consultations, installer demonstrations, product training and community education. It also announced the donation of two energy-storage systems to local charities and plans to collaborate with local installers in operating the facility.

Sungrow also indicated that school groups may be brought through the Hub, giving students the opportunity to see solar generation, battery storage, EV charging and energy management working together rather than encountering them only as classroom concepts.

The success of the Hub will ultimately depend on how actively it is used after the opening.

For households, it offers an opportunity to understand what they are purchasing before installation. For installers, it provides a working environment in which more complicated system behaviour can be demonstrated. For schools and community organisations, it could provide a practical introduction to technologies that will increasingly shape the way electricity is generated and consumed.

It may also encourage customers to ask more detailed questions.

How does the system behave during an outage? Which circuits remain powered? What happens when the battery is full? Can new functions be added later? Where is customer data stored? What continues operating without an internet connection? Can the system change electricity providers or join a VPP without new hardware? What happens to the battery at the end of its service life?

These questions are difficult to answer through a product brochure alone.

The opening of Sungrow’s Solar & Battery Experience Hub reflects the broader transformation occurring across residential energy.

Solar generation, storage, EV charging, software, AI and electricity retail are becoming increasingly interconnected. The technology is no longer simply purchased as a set of individual products. It is becoming an ongoing energy platform within the home or business.

Giving customers the opportunity to see that platform working before they invest in it is a sensible and timely step.
