I was provided the Quntis Solar Fence Lights to try out, and after testing them over a few nights in different spots and settings, it became pretty clear what they do well and what they don’t.

Design and Unboxing: Compact & Cordless

The box includes four sensor lights and everything you need to install them, including a measuring guide and screws. There is no assembly required, so they are ready to go straight out of the box. The lights were a lot smaller than I expected. Each light measures approximately 13cm long, 4cm wide and 3.2cm high, so they are quite compact. Not necessarily a bad thing, just not what I had pictured.

These lights are designed to be wall mounted, particularly along fences or other outdoor surfaces such as above garages or doorways, and on balconies and stairs. Mounting onto my timber fence using the screws was very simple and would suit most people. I also chose to mount three of the four lights using outdoor Gorilla tape on my Colorbond fence, as I didn’t want to damage it with holes.  Overall, installation is very easy. I don’t think anyone would have trouble getting these set up, particularly as there is no electrical work or cords to deal with, making it pretty low effort.

They also sit quite unobtrusively on the fence during the day, so they don’t take away from the look of the garden.

The LED lights provide quite a few colour options and modes, including static, gradual and faster colour change effects. It’s a bit of a change from typical outdoor lighting, which is usually just one standard light colour. I found the colour options to be many with a decent level of richness. I like having the option to switch between a warm light, a bright white, or more colourful settings depending on how I’m feeling, whether I’m in the mood for something subtle or something a bit more fun.

One thing to note, the on and off button is underneath the unit near the light itself. It is not difficult to use, but once installed it does mean a bit of fumbling to access it. I would suggest turning them on and selecting your preferred lighting colour and mode in a dark or dimly lit area before mounting. Given the lights only come on when the solar sensor detects darkness, you won’t be able to do this in broad daylight.

Performance: 50 Lumens of Ambient Glow

The battery performance is actually very solid. I tested the lights across a few nights, playing around with the different settings.

I allowed for a full day of charging before each night of testing, with the lights by the pool receiving around 6 hours of direct sunlight and the garden light being exposed for around 4. Sunset was around 6pm each night and they remained on until sunrise, just after 5am.  This was consistent whether running the lights on static mode or colour changing mode.

Quntis suggest optimal height placement to be about 1.2–1.5 meters and that the lights will cast a unique beam effect up to 4–5 meters away. In my testing, I did not find that height to be optimal nor the light spread to be the case.

I tested placement in a few areas, above a garden bed around 1.2 meters high, then another garden bed with placement much lower. I also trialed the lights along a section of fence just behind the pool, perhaps a half meter above the ground. I originally wanted to see if they would provide enough light for feature lighting or improved visibility.  These do not give off a large amount of light based on my testing. If you are expecting something that will create a well lit area, these won’t meet that expectation. The light is more of a narrow, downward strip rather than a wide spread. It creates a rectangular beam directly below the unit, with a soft glow around it, but it does not project far outwards.

When positioned higher, the light did not really highlight much of the area below. Mounting it lower improved the effect, but it is still quite subtle.

I also tested the bright white mode, thinking it might perform as suggested, however it did not make a significant difference to the overall spread of light. So it really comes down to how the light is designed, rather than how bright each mode is.

On one of the nights, I noticed a light had gone out earlier than the others. I went out around 1:45am to let the dog out (because apparently that’s the best time), and the light above the garden bed had already gone out, while the others over the pool were still on. We had light rain that evening, so I’m not sure if that had an impact, or if that particular light simply didn’t receive enough sunlight during that day to fully charge.

Best Uses for the Quntis Fence Lights

In my opinion, these lights are really more suited to decorative use than functional lighting.

They work well if you already have other lighting and want to add a bit of atmosphere. For example:

  • along a fence line
  • around a pool area
  • highlighting landscaping features (if positioned well)

In complete darkness, they don’t provide enough light to see by, but they do create a soft, ambient accent. For me, I can see them working really well as a nice glow around the pool once my landscaping is finished. The colour modes add a bit of a party feel, while the warm light gives a more subtle, polished look.

Because the lights are not overly bright, they are also not intrusive if left on all night, which is actually a benefit. You can leave them on without it feeling like you’ve got lights glaring from your yard into your bedroom.

Durability and Weather Resistance

These are marketed as waterproof, which you would expect for outdoor fence lights. I have had them outside in light rain, but I have not tested how they perform over time in heavier weather yet. The packaging also includes a note around cancer and reproductive harm, and with no explanation as to what that relates to, it does leave a bit of a question mark.

Verdict: Decorative Flair Over Function

If you are looking for something to light up a large space or provide visibility, this is not the product I’d suggest. They are not suitable as pathway or entry lighting where you need to see clearly. If you are looking for decorative, solar powered accent lighting, they do a good job. The battery life has been strong in my testing, the installation is easy, and the colour options give you flexibility depending on the look you are going for.

I can see myself getting more to run along the full length of my pool fence, purely for the aesthetic.

Overall, I would describe these as a design feature rather than a functional light, and as long as you go in with that expectation, they are a nice addition.
