Rolife has just launched one of the most ambitious dioramas I have seen to date – the Oxygen Oasis (DH102). This is an early build diary rather than a full review.
Instead of the cosy cafés or bookshops we’ve come to expect from the range, this kit takes you into a bright, glasshouse-inspired sanctuary filled with lush greenery, intricate shelving, and countless tiny details.
It’s an ambitious build that promises not only a stunning display piece but also a rewarding challenge for experienced miniature enthusiasts.
In two decades of writing reviews, this is a first for me — sharing my thoughts before I’ve actually finished building the product.
Rolife Oxygen Oasis (DH102) First Impressions
The Oxygen Oasis (DH102) shares the same DNA as previous Rolife dioramas I’ve reviewed. It arrives as a flat pack containing hundreds of delicate components spread across sheets of laser-cut wood, paper and plastic.
There are wires, specialty parts, a texta … and a large tube of glue.
That should have been my red flag.
The instruction manual is hefty and, if I’m honest, a little intimidating.
This is definitely not a kit you can rush through. Patience isn’t just recommended here — it is mandatory.
Building the Rolife Oxygen Oasis: Five Weeks In
I’ve spent many evenings slowly working my way through the Oxygen Oasis.
Despite being the sort of person who enjoys breaking large projects into manageable chunks, this build has become my own personal Everest.
Why?
Pets.
Let’s rewind for a moment.
Unlike previous Rolife kits, where many components interlock with precision-cut tabs and slots, almost every piece in the Oxygen Oasis requires glue.
The supplied adhesive dries slowly, which gives you plenty of time to position each component accurately. The downside is that you’re often waiting before you can continue assembling the next section.
The different materials — wood, plastic and paper — all bond slightly differently, so every step demands care and patience. Rushing simply isn’t an option.
On a typical evening I was lucky to complete one or two instruction steps.
Finding the pieces is generally straightforward, but many of the decorative elements are printed on paper. These need to be carefully cut out before being glued onto wooden parts. It’s fiddly work, and if you move too quickly the paper can shift while the glue is still wet.
The overall design is incredibly intricate, so it’s worth taking a few moments to study each step before committing. Some mistakes are difficult, if not impossible, to undo without damaging the parts.
After around five weeks of working on the kit several nights a week, I’ve completed just the two main archways and the central dome.
Unfortunately, one of those archways has become an ongoing battle with my cat, who seems determined to quality-test Rolife’s engineering. After being nudged one too many times while drying, several joints no longer sit flush thanks to layers of cured glue. I’ll likely need to sand the parts back and rebuild the section from scratch.
One recurring complaint I have is that the glue is very runny. You have to be quite deft at applying it and recapping to stop it leaking.
Early Verdict: An Incredible Build That Demands Patience
Part of me absolutely loves the challenge.
The other part thinks this project borders on madness.
Realistically, I expect this build to take me months — possibly even the better part of a year — to complete.
Is that a bad thing?
That depends entirely on the sort of builder you are.
Without the pressure of producing a review, I think this would be a relaxing project to lose myself in every few days. Under a review deadline, however, I found it more exasperating than relaxing.
This isn’t a kit you can casually build while watching television. It demands your full attention — not only to interpret the instructions, but also to execute each step accurately.
The engineering side of my brain genuinely appreciates the craftsmanship and design. Every structural element has a purpose, and the build follows a logical sequence.
Nothing I’ve encountered feels over-engineered for the sake of it.
Even the working French doors are assembled layer by layer, creating the lintel, frame and track before the doors themselves are installed.
Every layer and every tiny decorative piece contributes to the finished model. It’s just that Rolife has packed an extraordinary amount of detail into this kit.
And take the ornate gold detailing on the doors, for example. Every decorative flourish and every door handle is an individual paper piece that must be carefully removed and glued into place.
The part responsible for my sanity is currently screaming into the void.
This also isn’t a project I’d recommend attempting around curious pets or in a cluttered workspace. The pieces are tiny, easy to lose, and often vulnerable while the glue cures.
My recommendation?
A dedicated workspace, a large table, plenty of patience, and a conspicuous absence of pets before attempting the Rolife Oxygen Oasis (DH102).
The kit has an Australian RRP of A$89.99 and is available directly from Rolife. It carries a six-star difficulty rating, contains 1,168 pieces, and Rolife estimates 36 hours of assembly time.
For experienced builders working in long sessions that may well be achievable, but for someone like me — building a few evenings a week, letting glue cure properly, and occasionally defending the project from an inquisitive cat — that figure feels wildly optimistic.
