From S7 to Saros 10R: My Robot Vacuum Obsession Just Leveled Up

I still remember the mission (which I chose to accept) of convincing my wife that we needed a Roborock S7.Every time we would catch up with a couple of close friends, I would constantly hear “why don’t you have one yet? It will save your marriage!” and “it will change your lives.

Well, all of that was true! In typical DRN Editor fashion, I researched the daylights out of robot vacuums at the time, and it was the Roborock S7 that came out head and shoulders above the competition. It’s no wonder, really, that Roborock’s robot vacuums have consistently scooped up awards like CES Innovation Honoree, Red Dot Design Awards, and frequent spots on “Best Robot Vacuum” lists from major tech publications, thanks to their mix of clever engineering and one of the best apps in the game.

In saying that, the technology at the time had its limitations. You had to clear virtually everything off the floor that you didn’t want sucked up, and the mopping ability, whilst good, couldn’t get into those hard-to-reach spots, like corners.

As time marched on, the technological developments came thick and fast. Before the S7, Roborock had already dipped its toes into intelligent object avoidance with the S6 MaxV in 2020, their first robot equipped with cameras to help identify obstacles on the floor. Then came the S7 in early 2021, which introduced sonic mopping (the one I picked for this reason), followed by the S7 MaxV and S8 MaxV Ultra models, bringing further refinements in obstacle recognition, dual rubber brushes, and smarter navigation. Docking stations evolved too, adding self-emptying, water refilling, and mop washing features that pushed robot vacuums closer to true hands-free operation (something I’ve longed for!).

With the latest release, the Roborock Saros 10R, it comes with a raft of new features that make it an incredibly enticing proposition if you’re in the market for a new robot vacuum, and quite possibly even if you’re not actively shopping for one. It stands on the shoulders of the impressive S7 MaxV and S8 MaxV Ultra, but pushes the boundaries further with higher suction, spinning mop pads, improved AI obstacle avoidance, and the most sophisticated all-in-one dock Roborock has ever built.

Out of the Box: Slick, Slim, and Smarter-Looking Than Ever

The Saros 10R comes well packaged and is intuitive enough to assemble without the instructions (but I do recommend following them). I’m a fan of the use of the magnets used in lieu of clips and hinged components, too. The removable body panels snap into place easily and don’t budge, the same can be said for the rotating mop heads too.

The Dock is also incredibly easy to set up with minimal fuss. Remove a few pieces of adhesive tape, plug in your power cable. clip in the ramp and you’re good to go.

In the words of Henry Ford, you can have any colour you want, as long as it’s black – and this is also the case with the Saros 10R. Whilst Black does look good, it doesn’t hide dust too well, particularly the glossy bits. Other options like white would be nice for people may want it to suit their home aesthetic.

This is Roborock’s slimmest design yet. Thanks in part to the next gen StarsSight system, which has done away with the LiDar turret that featured on the top all of their of previous models. This improves its ability to get under sofas beds, and other pieces of furniture, at only 7.98cm high. (add a few more if you factor in the wheels).

What’s New Under the Hood: Power, AI, and That FlexiArm Magic

Building on the impressive features of the S8 MaxV Ultra and the Qrevo Curve, Roborock have taken all of their learnings, refined them yet again, and packaged all of their latest tech into the Saros 10R.

The list of features is long, but some notable mentions Roborock have improved upon (or introduced) include vacuum suction, which has doubled—from 10,000 Pa in the S8 MaxV Ultra to a very potent 20,000 Pa in the Saros 10R. There’s also upgraded Obstacle Avoidance, now powered by ReactiveAI 3.0, delivering smarter object recognition and better low-light navigation. Video Streaming is onboard too, allowing remote viewing through the robot’s camera for added peace of mind.

The battery range has increased from 180 minutes to an impressive 250 minutes, thanks to a larger 6,400 mAh battery. In addition, Roborock include their industry-first AdaptiLift Chassis technology, allowing the entire robot body to adjust height dynamically to accommodate abrupt height changes like high-pile rugs, and avoid getting stuck.

Other improvements include enhanced anti-tangle dual rubber brushes, a redesigned brush assembly for closer floor contact, and a refined all-in-one dock that not only empties the dustbin but also washes and hot-dries the mop pads. The dock even supports automatic detergent dosing for better floor hygiene.

And then there’s the Saros 10R’s party trick: the FlexiArm spinning side brush, designed to reach further into corners and edges, and the dual spinning mop pads which promise a deeper clean on stubborn stains and grout lines – a big leap over the vibration-based mopping of previous models, like my S7 or the S8 MaxV Ultra.

The App Is Half the Experience—And Roborock Knows It

One thing I’ve always loved about Roborock since owning my S7 was the user experience. It was easy to set up. The smartphone app made it simple to connect to my home network, manage maps (including multi-level), set up no-go zones, and manage schedules with ease. The whole interaction was smooth and intuitive.

The newer versions of the app have again built on Roborock’s renowned ability to create a stable, feature-rich, user-friendly experience. Thanks to the full range of sensors on the Saros 10R, the app can create highly detailed maps, automatically place furniture it detects during operation, and identify different types of floors and rugs. It can also provide you with a history of where objects were encountered and where they were detected, including pets.

A new addition in the Saros 10R is the 3D matrix map view, which lets you rotate and explore your home layout in three dimensions. It’s surprisingly impressive to see furniture shapes and floor types visualised, making it easier to fine-tune cleaning zones.

Another new feature is AI-driven cleaning suggestions, where the app learns your habits and recommends custom cleaning routines for different rooms or times of day. For anyone curious, or simply wanting peace of mind, the Saros 10R also offers live video streaming, letting you check in on your home or pets from anywhere.

Getting the Saros 10R familiar with your house is easy. Just fire it up and let SmartAI do its thing. It will set off on an initial exploration of your floor plan, the types of floors and rugs you have, and where your furniture is located, then decide on the best cleaning plan for your home. Once the mapping is complete, you’ll start to see floor types, furniture, and rugs appear on the map. Roborock recommend allowing a few full runs of your house for the Saros 10R to learn your floor plan and objects in full detail.

There’s no guarantee it will get it  everything right, though. For example, it guessed our laundry was our kitchen, most likely because the floor were tiled, and it had already correctly picked the bathroom next door. The good thing is however, you easily update the name of a room. My assumption is that because we have an open plan kitchen/family room, it’s hard to pick where the kitchen starts and finishes.

Smarter Than Your Average Bot: AI Navigation Gets a Brain Boost

The layout and make-up of your room helps SmartAI determine a cleaning plan. For example, the Saros 10R may opt to leave the mop heads in the docking station while it goes off on a vacuum-only run of your rugs and carpeted areas, before returning to the dock to reattach the mop heads and continue on with your hard floors.

This is exactly what it did in our house. Interestingly, with each cleaning run it completed, the Saros 10R altered its route and mode as it learnt and optimised its cleaning behaviour. Initially, the SmartAI function vacuumed all the hard floors without the mop heads, which drained its battery without completing a mop. The next time, however, it appeared to learn and combined vacuuming and mopping in one go for the hard floors, while retracting the mop heads instead of leaving them in the dock.

The AdaptiLift chassis is also a very impressive feature, allowing the Saros 10R to traverse thresholds up to 4cm high. We have a large tatami rug in our living area for the kids to play on, which is about 3 cm thick. The S7 we previously owned wasn’t able to climb it, so it would just skirt around the edges, vacuuming and mopping but leaving the mat out. We just accepted this and would vacuum it manually ourselves. The Saros 10R, on the other hand, was able to identify the mat, tilt its body upwards, and then crab-walk up onto it to continue vacuuming. You’re able to see where this mat is visible on the Roborock app too, as the Saros 10R will remember it and how to handle it in future. In the ultimate test, I also let it loose in our bathroom, which has a hobless entry and It was able to make it in but not back out. What made this absolutely fascinating was how it tried to remedy its predicament, by making several attempts to reverse and then do a “run-up” to get over it.

Thanks to Roborock’s latest generation of navigation tech and object avoidance, which includes solid state 3D LiDar, StarSight 2.0 ReactiveAI 3.0, the Saros 10R does an impressive job of building a lovely spatial picture of your house and avoiding objects left lying around on the floor. Now, as the father of two little boys who leave toys lying around (whose kids don’t?), I do my best to clear the floor so the Roborock has an uninterrupted path. But if I’m in a rush or the boys have built a car park on the rug, I know that virtually anything over 2 cm in size will be detected (and avoided) by the Saros 10R. In my tests, it picked up toy Power Rangers, Hot Wheels cars, magnetic panels and even stray socks scattered around the lounge room. The Saros 10R also has the ability to recognise and avoid cables, but Roborock still do recommend you move them out of the way if you remember!

To test out its object avoidance ability, I left a bunch of toys and other objects lying around the house, with my main focus on the tatami rug in the living area, where I left all of Hurricane Harry’s cats and a building he’d made out of magnetic panels. Once the Saros 10R traversed up onto the rug, it completed its regular zig-zag cleaning pattern and then slowed and gently nudged its way around the cars and garage without knocking anything over. What really impressed me was how it managed to stay within the bounds of the rug without moving back onto the hard floors. Any obstacles are flagged on the map and photographed so you can check out what they were remotely.

On our darker rug, the Saros 10R didn’t stall or throw an error, which is a big win compared to some older robot vacuums that would refuse to cross dark flooring. It even cleverly mapped around the legs of our dining table and chairs without endlessly circling them, which has saved heaps of cleaning time in our house.

If you’re a cat or dog owner, the Saros 10R has you covered too. Within the app, you’re able to switch on pet identification, which enables the robot to take a more cautious approach to your pet, or indeed its poop. We’ve all heard those horror stories of robot vacuums accidentally driving through pet poo and smearing it across the floor.

Our cat, Teddy, was initially wary of the Roborock but within a day or two, he’d stubbornly stand his ground when the Saros 10R approached him. This turned out to be an opportune moment to see the Saros 10R’s ReactiveAI smarts in action. Sure enough, it slowly made its way around Teddy and even took a (not so happy) snap with its camera that I could review on the map.

The Clean is in the Details: FlexiArms, Dual Mops and No Hair Left Behind

This is where those party tricks I spoke of earlier come into play. The Saros 10R’s FlexiArm Brush and Dual Mop Heads are truly impressive with their ability to reach once inaccessible corners.

When I fired up the Saros 10R for the first time, I eagerly followed it around the living area, waiting to watch the FlexiArms do their thing. First up was our dining table. As the Saros 10R drove around our dining chairs, the spinning mop and brush heads extended out and cleaned right around the chair legs and table legs. The same happened around our sliding stacker doors and throughout the kitchen space. The Saros 10R’s spinning brush and mop head extended out, cleaning right up along the edges, with the FlexiArm Mop Head constantly adjusting its geometry as needed to maintain a consistent clean. Working in conjunction with the FlexiArm Brush and HyperForce vacuum, you get Roborock’s most complete clean yet. As always, the Saros 10R automatically detects rugs and adjusts its vacuum suction accordingly. I could even hear the vacuum spooling up as it climbed on and off my rugs.

After ten or so cleans of our house, the anti-tangle FlexiArm and vacuum head have definitely lived up to their name. The other day, after hearing some clicking noises under the Saros 10R (because, yes, it’s excellent at detecting objects, but I guarantee you, rogue Lego will always find a way in), I flipped it over to remove the offending piece of Lego and a ball of hair conveniently bunched up in a space between the two vacuum heads, ready to pluck out, and not tangled around it.

The same goes for the brush head. I’m yet to see any hair tangled around it, which was one of my biggest bugbears with my S7. Back then, I’d have to remove the vacuum head, peel off the hair (or cut it if it was really bad), and unscrew the brush assembly to get rid of all the hair. That whole process could take 10 to 15 minutes, depending on how bad it was.

I’ve also been impressed by how well the dual spinning mop heads handle dried-on messes. Even the sticky spots under the kids dining chairs have disappeared without me needing to scrub them manually afterwards. Although, I’ll admit, the most stubborn sticky spots still needed a bit of extra elbow grease from me, but the Saros 10R’s ability to detect those patches and complete multiple passes over them was genuinely impressive.

The Mother of All Docks: Self-Washing, Hot Water, and Seven Weeks of Chill

As for the dock, Roborock’s 10-in-1 system is their most impressive unit yet. It’s the most comprehensive dock they’ve built so far, handling everything from auto dust emptying, mop washing and drying, detergent mixing, water refilling, hot mop cleaning, tank self-cleaning, mop pad soaking, heated water refills, drying the dock’s internals, and keeping your floors consistently clean with minimal effort from you (you’ll need to take a breath reading that out aloud). For a busy family like us, this is a must have, and a big-time saver. The time I used to spend cleaning the mop pads, washing the tank, refilling it and adding detergent easily took another 10-15 minutes.

One of the standout features is the hot-wash ability, which cleans the mop pads with water heated to around 80 degrees Celsius. This helps break down grease and grime far better than cold water alone and kills 99% of bacteria. It also fills the Saros 10R with warmed water and adds just the right amount of detergent, thanks to the built-in dispenser.

If you weren’t sure how good a job the mop heads are doing, you’ll know the moment you empty the dirty water reservoir down the sink, which was a lovely dark grey in my case. I’d recommend not fiddling too much with the Saros 10R’s defaults for self-cleaning. Every 15 minutes or so, it will return to base to clean its mop heads, so you’re not just smearing dirty mop heads all over your floor. Does it add more time to the total clean? Yes, but you also get a better quality clean.

It’s pretty quiet during mop washing and drying too, with the loudest moment being when it empties (sucks out) the dust from the reservoir in the Saros 10R. That part is quite noisy, but it doesn’t last long at all. The dock’s hot-air drying at 55 degrees Celsius keeps the mop pads fresh and avoids that gnarly mildew smell which could otherwise appear. After more than ten cleans, I’ve only just started filling the dust bag, which tells me the dock could easily go a few weeks between empties, even in a busy family home. Roborock say that you can get about seven weeks out of the dock’s vacuum bag without emptying, and that tracks.

Final Verdict: Roborock’s Saros 10R is the Hands-Free King

All up, between the FlexiArm functionality, the anti-tangle design, the hot washing, and the thorough mopping, this is one of the most complete experiences you’ll get from any robot vacuum on the market right now. I’ve been incredibly impressed with the Saros 10R’s ability not only to clean, but to keep itself clean.

When I think about all the time I used to spend picking up everything off the floor, cleaning my S7’s mop head, untangling hair from the components, filling the water reservoir, mixing in cleaning solution and emptying the dust container, the Saros 10R feels like the ultimate robot vacuum for the lazy person, or for a busy family like ours. For me, it easily saves around 30 to 45 minutes every time I run it, although your total time saved might vary depending on how much floor prep or maintenance you’d normally do.

The Roborock Saros 10R deserves to be at the very top of your shopping list if you’re on the hunt for a new robot vacuum. And if you haven’t dipped your toe into the world of robot vacuums yet, there’s never been a better time than now to jump in.
